Mak bosses, student clash with Mamdani | UgandaNuz | Scoop.it
What began as a low-level intra-departmental conflict with his pioneer student of the 2012 PhD programme has escalated, pitting Prof Mahmood Mamdani against university authorities.
Makerere University’s Institute of Social Research (Misr), a department headed by Mamdani, is once again torn by conflict. Mamdani and the university are in conflict over Yusuf Serunkuma.
In his final year in 2016, Serunkuma disagreed with Mamdani over the administration and supervision of his PhD work. When internal negotiations failed, Serunkuma appealed to the top administration of Makerere University including the College of Humanities and Social Sciences [Chuss], and the vice chancellor. He complained about alleged “abuse of office” by the Misr director.

The New Jinja Bridge

The New Jinja Bridge | UgandaNuz | Scoop.it

A new bridge also known as the Second Nile Bridge or the New Nile Bridge has been commissioned on October 17, 2018 in Jinja, Uganda. The 525 meter (1,722 ft) long and 22.9 metre (75 ft) wide bridge was funded by the Japanese government through a soft loan of US $100m with the Ugandan government topping up with counterpart funding of US $25m bringing the total cost to US $125. It is reported to be the second longest cable-stayed bridge in East Africa after Kigamboni in Dar es Salaam Tanzania. It is expected to have a life span of 120 years and has added immense beauty to the environs of the Source of the River Nile and Jinja town.

Coincidentally or by design, in the Shinto religion of Japan, Jinja is a place where spiritual deities are enshrined or summoned. In the olden times, jinja were located in places of great natural beauty. To the Lusoga-speaking Basoga of Busoga where beautiful Jinja is located, idhindha (corrupted by a neighboring nationality to Jinja) means a stone or rock and Idhindha is a place of great natural beauty.

How Britain purged colonial records towards independence

How Britain purged colonial records towards independence | UgandaNuz | Scoop.it
As independence approached, the British introduced a policy of purging documents containing details of their activities in the colonies, including Uganda.
This policy, codenamed ‘Operation Legacy’, started in India which got independence in 1947. However, it was not a top-bottom directive that originated in London; rather it was initiated in the colonies to match the circumstances.
The goal was to save the honour of Britain and the local collaborators. An article by Shohei Sato tilted “‘Operation Legacy’: Britain’s destruction and concealment of colonial records worldwide” published in the Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History last year, says the policy with regard to colonial documents worldwide evolved from “destroy” to migrate”, to “conceal”.
