1. Imperialism- a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force

* One reason the old empires did crumble was the changing balance of forces in world imperialism 

 

2. Muckraker- the action of searching out and publicizing scandalous information about famous people in an underhanded way

*Upton Sinclair was the most famous muckraker.

 

3. Annex- append or add as an extra or subordinate part, esp. to a document

*The united states illegally annexed hundreds of islands to get at the good stuff.

 

4. Constitution- a body of fundamental principles or established precedents according to which a state or other organization is acknowledged to be governed

*A new draft constitution was expected to be agreed in mid july

 

5. Conventional- based on or in accordance with what is generally done or believed

*Its crucial you dont see economic development as purely conventional private sector model.

 

6. Overthrow- remove forcibly from power

*Overthrow capitalism still evokes enormous fear for big business

 

7. Integration (integrate) - combine (one thing) with another so that they become a whole

*Outreach strategies developed and used to facilitate integration into the mainstream school will be described.

 

8. Territory- an area of land under the jurisdiction of a ruler or state

*Inevitably, this left the british and french occupying the adjacent territory

 

9. Provision- the action of providing or supplying something for use

10.Petition- A formal written request, typically one signed by many people, appealing to authority with respect to a particular cause.
*The students signed a petition to gain chocolate milk back.

Annotation: This was an actual petition from September 11, 1897. This was the Men's petition against the Annexation of Hawaii. The Hawaiians were not happy about the annexation. They did not want to change their government, religion, and way of living. So on September 11, 1897, the Hawaiians turned in a petition to the government to try and stop the happening of the annexation.
