A Video of Haiti’s Camps After Sandy

A Video of Haiti’s Camps After Sandy | Focus Haiti | Scoop.it

Almost three years after an earthquake devastated Haiti, 370,000 people are still living in the tent camps that became their homes.

Now, some have lost even that. Haitian officials say that 18,000 families living in tent camps have been rendered homeless by Hurricane Sandy, which has killed 52 there since making landfall last week.

The number of casualties may continue rising, as aid workers have found 86 new cases of cholera just in the earthquake survivor camps of capital city Port-au-Prince. A cholera outbreak that began after the quake has killed an estimated 7,400 since October 2010.

US Issues New Travel Warning For Haiti

US Issues New Travel Warning For Haiti | Focus Haiti | Scoop.it

WASHINGTON, USA -- The US Department of State has issued a new travel warning to inform US citizens traveling to or living in Haiti about the current security situation.

This replaces the travel warning dated June 18, 2012, and updates information regarding the level of crime, the presence of cholera, lack of adequate infrastructure - particularly in medical facilities - seasonal severe inclement weather, and limited police protection.

The State Department urges US citizens to exercise caution when visiting Haiti. Thousands of US citizens safely visit Haiti each year, but the poor state of Haiti’s emergency response network should be carefully considered when planning travel. Travelers to Haiti are encouraged to use organizations that have solid infrastructure, evacuation, and medical support options in place.

The CIA World Factbook About Haiti

The CIA World Factbook About Haiti | Focus Haiti | Scoop.it

The native Taino Amerindians - who inhabited the island of Hispaniola when it was discovered by Christopher COLUMBUS in 1492 - were virtually annihilated by Spanish settlers within 25 years. In the early 17th century, the French established a presence on Hispaniola. In 1697, Spain ceded to the French the western third of the island, which later became Haiti. The French colony, based on forestry and sugar-related industries, became one of the wealthiest in the Caribbean but only through the heavy importation of African slaves and considerable environmental degradation. In the late 18th century, Haiti's nearly half million slaves revolted under Toussaint L'OUVERTURE.

Haiti Among Safest Destinations In The Americas Say Recent Studies

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Haiti is one of the safest destinations; not just in the Caribbean, but throughout all the Americas. This is the general finding of recent studies on crime in the region which show that Haiti has the lowest rate of violent deaths in comparison to previous years.

In 2012 according to the UNODC, Haiti's violent death rate of 6.9 out of every hundred thousand Haitians is among the lowest rates in the Americas, and the same as Long Beach, California. This is mainly attributable to a strong focus on the strengthening and modernization of its security forces.
