There are seven sea turtle species protected around the world. Four of them can currently be found in Indonesia’s Banyuwangi regency in the East Java Province, but they soon may completely disappear. The four protected sea turtles are the green sea turtle, the leatherback sea turtle, the hawksbill sea turtle and the olive ridley sea turtle. All of them reside in the coastal area of the Alas Purwo National Park and the Meru Betiri National Park. The leader of Banyuwangi Sea Turtle Foundation, Wiyanto Haditanojo, said that he and other experts are worried about the significantly decreased number of turtles that have been laying their eggs in the coastal area over the last 10 years. Haditanojo says this decrease is caused by humans who hunt the turtles to get their meat, eggs, and shells. He adds that the most effective way to preserve the species is to inform the public about the importance of protecting sea turtle eggs from human predators.
