Latest ocean warming review reveals extent of impacts on nature and humans. | Tropical Fish Aquarists | Scoop.it
Ocean warming is affecting humans in direct ways and the impacts are already being felt, including effects on fish stocks and crop yields, more extreme weather events and increased risk from water-borne diseases, according to what has been called...
Stephen Pond's insight:
Climate change is going to be more dreadful than we can imagine, it is time to think how to slow it down and get iit under control. Pretty soon historical fishing areas will be gone and that could cause a large migration in populations of both fish and fishermen.

Stop Importing Tropical Fish Captured With Cyanide

Stop Importing Tropical Fish Captured With Cyanide | Tropical Fish Aquarists | Scoop.it
Up to 90 percent of tropical fish imported to the U.S. are captured using cyanide. Sign this petition to stop the import of fish caught with this cruel method.
Stephen Pond's insight:

We are after all tropical fish aquarists - there is no reason to shorten the life of the fish we keep by capturing them with cyanide - it is dangerous and destroys the ecological area where the fish we love to keep are native - Be sure any fish you keep is either domestically bred and raised or captrured ethically before it comes into your possession.  The figure that 90% of all marine fish captured in the wild are caught using cyanide is very disturbing to anyone determined to keep their fish in the best possible conditons in your personal aquariums.

Molten Salt Is A Fish Tank's Worst Enemy | Tropical Fish Aquarists | Scoop.it

Stephen Pond's insight:

I do use salt in my aquarium occasionally, but never anything like this - molten salt makes no sense to be added to a living system - only aquarium salt - salt with no iodine and in a pure form.  Always be aware of putting in strange things to an aquarium, you never know what the resuts might be.!

There are some creepy little animals that live in aquariums

Just set up a jararium and spotted all these little critters swimming around. Only thing I've added is old aquarium gravel and old filter media from my tank....

Stephen Pond's insight:

Interesting video of the kinds of minute animals that are found naturally in the water of an aquarium.  Not a surprise to most intermediate aquarists, water supports an enormous variety of life, but this shows it off pretty clearly.  In a functioning aquarium, many of these would be invisible food for the fish.  It is normally only when there are no higher life forms available that such a show could be mounted.

Stephen Pond's insight:

This is a very complete look at a disease (actually a parasite) that will normally afflict aquarium fish sometime in your fishkeeping days.  It can be treated and controlled, but there is often a lot of confusion as to how to treat it properly.  I have always believed if you know enough about the problem, you can pick the right solution.

Here is a very different way to do your computing - stuff the machine in a fish tank.  If you want to know how to do it, here is an article that will help.  The computer is not in water, it is immersed in oil, but still contained in the fish tank.  Quite a different way to do your e-mail!!!

Decline of fishing in Lake Tanganyika 'due to warming' - BBC News

Decline of fishing in Lake Tanganyika 'due to warming' - BBC News | Tropical Fish Aquarists | Scoop.it
New research blames rising temperatures over the last century as the key cause of decline in Lake Tanganyika, one of the world's most important fisheries.
Stephen Pond's insight:
Global warming may be rearing its ugly head in one of my favourite places for tropical fish the African Cichlids of Lake Tanganyika.  Many have pointed to the decline in fish catches as a result of overfishing, but newer thoughts that the increased global temperatures have made stratification a problem since it prevents the nutrient rich lower levels more difficult to mix with the oxygen rich fish loaded upper levels.

Stephen Pond's insight:

This video captured my interest for the whole video - very well done with time lapse and and a lot of information on keeping crayfish, close to everything you need to know to be successful - including the fact they are very hardy - the author states if you kill them, you probably should not keep live fish....Don't know if that is entirely true, but it does make a statement on how hardy these species are.
