I had a similar sense of awe during a recent visit in Meteora, Greece. Meteora which translates roughly to “suspended in air” or “in the heavens above” can be found in central Greece, four and half hours away by car from Athens. Six Greek Orthodox monasteries stand sentry on towering, sandstone pillars.

Meteora is a complex of Eastern Orthodox monasteries built the into natural sandstone pillars on the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly. It is believed that the original monasteries built in the 11th and 12th centuries were used by hermit monks seeking isolation. During the Turkish occupation of Greece between the 15th and 19th centuries, the monasteries’ difficult location made them a shelter from the influence of the foreign rulers.

The Monasteries of Meteora

When you look at how sheer these rock faces are, you’ll realize what an amazing feat this was. Those 11th-century monks hauled up everything from people to building supplies using baskets and pulley systems — there were no roads, pathways, or even steps here until the 1920s.
