My Favorite Memory: I have so many great memories, I don’t think I can choose just one. My favorite memory related to my actual volunteer work is playing soccer, throwing the Frisbee, and playing games in the courtyard with the kids at the Clinic. Also, I prepared little Christmas stockings full of gifts for each child and passed them out on my last day at the clinic. They were so excited, happy, and grateful and showered me in hugs. It was absolutely wonderful. My other favorite memory was cooking Thanksgiving dinner with the girls in the house for our house mom and celebrating the holiday with them. It was really nice that we were able to share something from our American culture with our house mom.

Tip for future volunteers…   Money donations are best. Bring lots of high level of sunscreen. Caye Caulker and the ruins are a must see.

Hand Jive - Top 7 Common US Hand Gestures May Lead to Trouble Abroad @The_Infographic @PimsleurTweets

Hand Jive - Top 7 Common US Hand Gestures May Lead to Trouble Abroad @The_Infographic @PimsleurTweets | "#Volunteer Abroad Information: Volunteering, Airlines, Countries, Pictures, Cultures" | Scoop.it
After reading this infographic, the stadium full of University of Texas Longhorn fans holding up their hands in a symbol of team spirit has a whole new meaning.

Hand gestures, like culturally specific slang, do not always translate well across countries.

American travelers have enough to worry about without inadvertently insulting someone.

The peace sign moonlights as an often censored expletive when thrown up in Australia or New Zealand, and gesturing to “come here” with the pointer finger is punishable with jail time in the Philippines.

My Favorite Memory: My favorite memory would have to be being chosen as the godmother of Sam (an ABV coordinator) child who is due in April. My other favorite memory is being able to bond with the children of Good Hope and getting to know them.

I was surprised that…. to live comfortably and be happy I actually needed very little and that my laptop was not a necessity!

The most difficult thing I experienced was….The most difficult thin for me was realizing how far from home I actually was and becoming comfortable with that.

Active Retirees, “Empty Nesters” and Baby Boomers Welcome! | Volunteer Abroad News | "#Volunteer Abroad Information: Volunteering, Airlines, Countries, Pictures, Cultures" | Scoop.it

We are frequently asked about age restrictions in our programs. Since our ABV programs are individually tailored, we welcome active middle age and retirees into our programs. We value your life experience and appreciate the skills and maturity that you can share with others.

Volunteer Testimonial: Tim McKinney (Chicago, IL)

…If you dream of volunteering, but are waiting for the perfect time, the opportunity may pass. There will never be a “perfect” time. If you wait too long, health and ambulatory issues may intervene to keep you from having a magnificent and even life-changing experience. Volunteer now and enrich your life and the lives of children who will fill your heart!”

I enjoyed my time in Zambia. At the moment I would recommend spending time at the orphanage as this is where I believe you can make the greatest difference. Although this house is thankfully well supported with donations for food, medical care and clothing

How My Volunteer Work Changed Me | Volunteer Abroad News

How My Volunteer Work Changed Me | Volunteer Abroad News | "#Volunteer Abroad Information: Volunteering, Airlines, Countries, Pictures, Cultures" | Scoop.it

Upon my arrival at House Net, I was immediately introduced to a group of extremely energetic toddlers. Jumping, spitting, pinching, hair-pulling toddlers. These were my charges.
After playing with a couple of the kids for less than an hour, it was very touching when they began referring to me as Mami. Here I was, a teenager who spoke little more Spanish than these toddlers, and they were placing me on a maternal pedestal of glory. I had a lot to live up to
