As the rest of the world panicked in 2012 about the end of the world supposedly described by the Mayan calender, many in Central America celebrated the transition. While one form of the Mayan calender did in fact end on December 21st, 2012, it was never supposed to mean the end of time, but the dawn of a new time. This date was supposed to represent the end of a Long count cycle of 144,000 days.It was meant to be a time of celebration and change, but people all over the world instead treated it as the end of the world. It is peculiar that the media focused on how people outside of this culture perceived the "end date" instead of looking to the people who try to follow the ancient culture of their ancestors.
