Hotel Villa Tre Ville, Positano, Amalfi Coast | Travel Notes from Ischia, Capri and Amalfi Coast | Scoop.it

Once the home of Franco Zeffirelli, Villa Tre Ville is a private estate turned design hotel poised above the iconic Positano waterfront amongst dramatic gardens, wide open lawns and four homes that make up the current property.

Once home to Russian writer Mikhail Semenov, the property was later acquired by Zifferelli who entertained the likes of Laurence Olivier, Liz Taylor and Leonard Bernstein before its current owner, Giovanni Russo revamped the property with architect Fausta Gaetani - a friend of Zeffirelli.

Positano on the Amalfi Coast

Positano on the Amalfi Coast | Travel Notes from Ischia, Capri and Amalfi Coast | Scoop.it

When John Steinbeck arrived in 1953 to write his famous article for Harper's Bazaar, he found a pretty little fishing village known only to a few, mostly Italian, cognoscenti. But the cat was out of the bag and the dolce vitajet set moved in, big time, in the 1960s.

You come to drink in the matchless views along with your Campari, to shop for flowing linen and handmade sandals, or simply to watch the passing parade of tanned women in gold sandals and immaculately groomed men in pastel shades, cashmere sweaters draped over their shoulders.

Take a boat to explore the many small coves up and down the coast, a trip that can easily be combined with a stop-off for lunch at Da Adolfo beach shack on Laurito Beach. Book a table and wait on the jetty for the gozzowith the red fish on its mast to come and pick you up.

Visiting Hot Springs and Spas on the Island of Ischia

Visiting Hot Springs and Spas on the Island of Ischia | Travel Notes from Ischia, Capri and Amalfi Coast | Scoop.it

What to do and where to visit hot springs on the island of Ischia, Italy.

Hot springs on the island of Ischia have been popular since ancient times and the water is believed to be the most radioactive in Europe, making the thermal springs good for a variety of health treatments. Resorts and thermal parks have been built around many of the hot springs to use the healing waters in their spas. Several of the island's thermal resorts and spas are open to the public for day use and can be visited as a day trip from the Amalfi Coast or Naples by ferry. For those who don't want to go to the spa, the island has charming towns and good beaches and sees fewer tourists than nearby Capri.

Take a virtual visit to the island with these Pictures of Ischia.

Amalfi Coast, Praiano & La Praia

Amalfi Coast, Praiano & La Praia | Travel Notes from Ischia, Capri and Amalfi Coast | Scoop.it

Praiano & La Praia

A few bends to the east along the coast road is low-key Praiano, which has a couple of very cool, rather new, rather fresh places to stay. There isn't really a centre to the village (unless you count the busy Bar del Sole), but it has a huge church with a colourful dome, and a rocky beach, La Gavitella, at the bottom of 350-plus steps, where you can enjoy the last rays of the evening sun - bliss on this convoluted stretch of coast.

To really understand the topography of thecostiera here, you need to get down to sea level. You can pick up a boat in Positano or Amalfi, but you can also take a detour down to cute Marina di Praia (aka La Praia), a clutch of cottages and a small beach wedged between towering cliffs, where there's a boat concession and a couple of simple restaurants to set you up for your trip.

Hidden depths of the Amalfi Coast

Hidden depths of the Amalfi Coast | Travel Notes from Ischia, Capri and Amalfi Coast | Scoop.it

For an authentic taste of la dolce vita on Italy’s lemon-scented shore, let our insider guide you off the beaten track...

Nicky Swallow lost her heart to this famed Italian coast 30 years ago and has been returning on and off season ever since.  Venturing away from the well-trodden tracks, she seeks out the  hottest new highlights, secluded old favourites and secret spots that only the locals know about.

The Amalfi Coast remains an intriguing mix of sophistication and simplicity. A mere seagull's spit from the super yachts, chauffeur-driven Mercedes-Benz and five-star hotels, another more rural reality exists. Around precariously stacked hill villages, farmers still cultivate small plots of steeply terraced land, and their wives make cheese; down on the coast, tiny fishing communities make a living from the sea.

Fifteen years ago Palazzo Sasso opened and immediately transformed the already popular Amalfi Coast region of Italy, becoming the top choice of luxury travelers. While much of the Amalfi coast is overbuilt, with homes and hotels terraced into the hillsides on top of one another, the quaint town of Ravello is a peaceful exception.

It is here in the enchanted village of Ravello that Palazzo Sasso has built a reputation as one of Italy’s very best resorts...

Positano raakt je diep (Amalfikust)

Positano raakt je diep (Amalfikust) | Travel Notes from Ischia, Capri and Amalfi Coast | Scoop.it
