Five Storytelling Lessons From The Force Awakens | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it
The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Chuck Wendig:  "[...] I wanted to take a look at the film for some of the storytelling lessons it offers — in this case, not negative lessons (of which you could find some, I’m sure), but rather, positive takeaways that might wet your mind whistle when it comes to thinking about your story or other stories or, I dunno, delicious enchiladas."

'Star Wars' Proves How Much the Experience Still Matters to Most

'Star Wars' Proves How Much the Experience Still Matters to Most | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it
The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Alex Billington:  "Many moviegoers (myself included) have already seen the new Star Wars two or three times, with plans to catch it a few more times while it's playing in theaters. This will definitely help set a box office precedent but beyond that it's proof it's possible to make storytelling so valuable that, even if it's not the best movie of the year, people are willing to pay to re-watch up to four or five or six times. That's remarkable."

You Won’t Live to See the Final Star Wars Movie

You Won’t Live to See the Final Star Wars Movie | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it
The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Adam Rogers:  "The shared universe represents something rare in Hollywood: a new idea. It evolved from the narrative techniques not of auteur or blockbuster films but of comic books and TV, and porting that model over isn’t easy. It needs different kinds of writers and directors and a different way of looking at the structure of storytelling itself. Marvel prototyped the process; Lucasfilm is trying to industrialize it."

James Whitbrook:  "When Star Wars released in 1977, the face of science fiction in popular culture was changed forever — but a year later, the movie helped transform the toy industry as well. Since then, Star Wars and the toys it inspired have been forever linked, a story that can just as easily be told through figures as it can the films."

Disney and Lucasfilm are working to create a new Star Wars trilogy, a few stand-alone films, a new animated television series following the origins of the Rebellion, plus books, games and even theme park attractions. And from what we’ve heard, the plan is for all of them to interconnect and cross over among one another in ways we’ve never seen in the history of storytelling.

Jason Hamilton:  "It's impossible to track down exactly when transmedia began to take effect as a major form of storytelling. As with any movement, it built up bit by bit, and is still gaining momentum. However, almost anyone with any knowledge in the area would agree that one of the biggest early influences was the film Star Wars and the pop culture phenomenon it started."

For those who saw this the first time through - and those who wish they had.

Nathan Schultz's curator insight, November 25, 2015 4:49 PM

In an open letter to JJ Abrams, ad agency Sincerely Truman offers some advice to the future Star Wars director on various storytelling elements that he can use to improve his movies.  This article is interesting for two reasons:  1.  It's about Star Wars, and

2.  It shows how an ad agency, by tapping into consumer demographics, has created a list of things that the public wants to see in their Star Wars movies.  In short, Star Wars is being treated like a product, which the director has to shape into a form that is more palatable to audiences.  In short, marketing is affecting storytelling.
