How Viewers Can Change Storytelling

How Viewers Can Change Storytelling | Transmedia | Scoop.it
Two days ago I was talking with Gale Anne Hurd, the woman behind Terminator and Aliens and currently the executive producer of The Walking Dead. We were talking about storytelling and transmedia and she agreed that it was the future.

More on the changing role of the viewer, this time from the perspective of Walking Dead etc.

Hans Heesterbeek's curator insight, September 16, 2013 12:26 AM

What we can learn from this chat with Gale Anne Hurd is that:

Storytelling today means not only telling but even listeningThrough ancillary elements of the project you can have useful information about the viewersSocial networks sentiment is a true source of information better than any researchViewers join the storytelling and in a near future will become storytellers

Viewership is as changing as storytelling and rules must be broken even when the most experienced producers are attempting to tell the “perfect story”.

I just love the way these guys are thinking :

“It’s such a wild, wooly world out there in online video,” says Hullum. “We don’t really think of competition in that capacity.” He describes an employee of the company they found through videos he’d made that were similar to the ones Rooster Teeth makes. “We could have been, like, Oh, this guy’s trying to do what we’re doing,” he says in a mock-disappointed voice. “Instead, we said, Oh, this guy’s doing cool stuff like we do! Let’s talk to him! And he’s a great guy to have on the team.”

Gaming is a great way to experience a story in a variety of ways, often choosing the story you would like to experience based on a set of given boundaries. Kind of like a choose your own adventure book, but typically with better graphics. that is not to say, however, that gaming replaces books, performance art, theatre, etc. Convergence isn't replacement.

"In a ground-breaking initiative called Midsummer Night’s Dreaming, delivered in substantial part by Google’s creative division, the action will primarily be experienced at one digital remove through a dedicated website – dream40.org – which has already gone live. This site will anticipate, comment on and followShakespeare’s action – as enacted largely unseen by the RSC cast – using specially devised materials, whether it be tweets, animations or other postings, and will draw too on material supplied by the online world. In other words, it will be the buzz around the events – some of it generated by 35 ancillary characters, specially created for the occasion – that takes centrestage."
