Thomas Jones: More pre-schoolers know how to use a smartphone than tie their shoelaces. Is this the future of child learning, or a picture of alienation?

"She found that with the electronic toys, "Parents were not less affectionate, but they were less responsive, less encouraging and did far less teaching. It was almost like the toy was interfering. They were trying to figure out a) how to make it work and b) how to have the child make it work." -The Guardian

Why It’s Imperative to Teach Empathy to Boys

Why It’s Imperative to Teach Empathy to Boys | Transmedia 4 Kids: Creating Content For Children | Scoop.it
We need to cultivate empathy in all children, but gender stereotypes -- often reinforced in playrooms -- risk leaving boys, in particular, with a social deficit.
cynthia jabar's insight:

"Empathy also yields happiness. People with empathy have stronger interpersonal connections and are more eager to collaborate, effectively negotiate, demonstrate compassion, and offer support."

A Way with Words | HMS

A Way with Words | HMS | Transmedia 4 Kids: Creating Content For Children | Scoop.it
cynthia jabar's insight:

"Babies are primed to learn language—any language—while still in the womb, and are born ready to continue the task. Takao Hensch, an HMS professor of neurology at Boston Children’s Hospital, puts it this way, “All infants are born as citizens of the world, meaning that an infant born in Japan could just as easily acquire English as Japanese or any other language.”

The newborn brain is highly plastic; that is, it can readily form new synaptic connections, the types of connections that are vital to processing the continuous streams of new information infants glean from what they hear, see, and touch. Research shows that in the early postnatal period, an infant’s brain forms an abundance of neural connections, and then, over time and in response to environmental influences and experience, pares those connections that are not useful. In language development, this process of perceptual narrowing, says Hensch, allows the brain to rewire itself to better represent its native speech or language. Hensch, whose research focuses on how early life experience physically shapes the brain, adds that “the brain is simply doing what it is good at. It is retaining that which is important and removing that which is not.”- Takao Hensch

The $23,000 T-shirt: Teaching Copyright in Today’s Social Media Culture | Mediashift | PBS | Transmedia 4 Kids: Creating Content For Children | Scoop.it
How much is a T-shirt or a tweet worth? Two copyright cases, separated by nearly 30 years, should reinforce our need as educators to teach copyright as a practical matter as much as a conceptual one. When it comes to working with students, we should approach copyright from two protective angles.

This is a really important lesson in digital citizenship. As more people create content, we have ensure we know who owns the image and make appropriate attribution. - CJ

Why Free Play Is the Best Summer School

Why Free Play Is the Best Summer School | Transmedia 4 Kids: Creating Content For Children | Scoop.it
The more time children spend in structured, parent-guided activities, the worse their ability to work productively towards self-directed goals.
cynthia jabar's insight:

Couldn't agree more! "Parents, if you really want to give your kid a head start on coming school year, relinquish some of that time you have earmarked for lessons or sports camp and let your children play. That’s it. Just play. Grant them time free from your ulterior motives and carefully planned educational outcomes. Let them have dominion over their imaginary kingdoms while their evil dragons, white wizards, marauding armies, and grand battles for supremacy unfurl according to their whims and wills.' -Jessica Lahey

Stretching a brand from print to digital, by Joe Wikert

Stretching a brand from print to digital, by Joe Wikert | Transmedia 4 Kids: Creating Content For Children | Scoop.it
Can it really be done? Can you take a brand that’s well established in the print world and move it to digital? You might think that’s a silly question as it’s already been done many times....
cynthia jabar's insight:

"Is your brand closely aligned with the concept of print? If so, regardless of your current strategy you need to honestly assess how far you can stretch that brand into digital. Even if you believe your print-to-digital transition has been successful, take a hard look at your digital-first competitors then ask yourself this last question: If I had the chance to do it all over again, would I recommend we follow the same strategy we did originally or would we have been better off creating a totally new brand? " -Joe Wikert
