Lance Weiler:  "An ambitious project that has evolved over the past year with what now amounts to a little over 1,000 collaborators stepping in and out as Sherlock Holmes & the Internet of Things ebbs and flows. As it transforms and evolves, the project has generated a unique experiential learning environment that encourages participants to apply creativity to adaptively problem solve. We’ve come to refer to it as rabbit hole learning, as participants tumble through the opening, we’re working hard to make them comfortable with the unknown."

What's Blocking The $11 Trillion IoT Opportunity

Richard Platt's curator insight, June 29, 2015 3:52 PM

Unfortunately, there are plenty of factors impeding this data-rich future. The problems range from the 400-plus competing IoT standards to lack of global Internet connectivity, and more.

McKinsey also offers a range of complicating factors. Topping the firm's list, rightly so, is the matter of varying standards which prevent many systems and devices from communicating with each other.  McKinsey describes this incompatibility as the primary roadblock:  Interoperability between IoT systems is critical. Of the total potential economic value the IoT enables, interoperability is required for 40% on average and for nearly 60% in some settings.  The report goes on to suggest two fixes: "Adopting open standards is one way to accomplish interoperability. Interoperability can also be achieved by implementing systems or platforms that enable different IoT systems to communicate with one another."  Vendors largely control the 400-plus competing standards, but the battle for developer hearts won't be won by a corporate logo-laden home page. Open source, however, could help, allowing developers to focus on interoperable code, rather than interoperable vendors

Brad Tollefson's curator insight, July 9, 2015 12:38 AM

The three Cs are:

Characters – the importance of storyConvenience – the importance of getting the right content to the right people at the right timeCommunity – the importance of connecting fans and rewarding them.

At the intersections we see the actions and functions we must support:

Characters+Convenience – the personalization of the story experience for each person based on their relationship to the worldConvenience+Community – the continued “personalization” but in a broader sense as applied to audience segments. For example an audience team collaborates to unlock content that only they can see. Also at this intersection is the ability to share content and refer friends to the worldCommunity+Characters – this is the relationship between the community and the world. Creators should provide opportunities to strengthen the relationship through procedures and technology to allow fan contributions, character interactions and such like.

Dr. Karen Dietz's curator insight, June 25, 2015 2:16 PM

One of my Twitter buddies, Os @ICGJ_IDEATION, found and shared this article with me and I think these interactive storytelling activities could easily be adapted to business settings. The post was written by Anastasia Salter @AnaSalter for the Chronicle of Higher Education.

I'm always on the hunt for fun ways to work with stories in my business storytelling workshops.  I think the first game will be really easy to adapt/work with.

For the second game, it will take a little work, but I think the free Google Doc can be tweaked to address complex business situations. I see this fitting nicely with the post I recently curated by Madelyn Blair on using narrative for problem solving.

I've always liked Story Cubes and think they are great for generating stories for all kinds of business situations, like sales and marketing. Instead of starting the story with "Once upon a time..." (that will never fly in business), I like using "It happened one day..."

So check out this post and start using these games for generating business stories, working through complex problems, and having more fun doing it all.

"Automation" is an important part of the equation. Internet of Things is not about moving the switches from the wall into the device (smartphone or tablet), but to remove them all!

We are at a stage where software has a concrete opportunity to reinvent the hardware.

Security is another important part of the equation. And it only happens if you include it in your design. This requires time, people, resource and money.

Even more, security and easy of use are on different part of the balance. There is a trade-off between "plug and play" and security, and it is not yet clear how to achieve the best balance.
