So simple… yet so useful! Bilingual XML Filetype and Cleanup Tasks OpenExchange applications for SDL Trados Studio (by Paul Filkin, SDL) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

I'm certainly no expert on knots, but I do like them... The image on the left is actually a Carrick Bend and it’s another one I like… simple to use and yet brilliant for joining two ropes together. I used this as the image for my article simply because it’s a very loose introduction to the idea of how every new app on the SDL AppStore seems to provide another opportunity to string apps together and deal with problems that would be tricky with Studio alone. I love that!

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:
Paul Filkin describes how two simple OpenExchange applications for SDL Trados Studio, Bilingual XML Filetype and Cleanup Tasks, can be used together to translate a multilingual XML file with placeholders as part of a localization process.

… and the winner is? Term extraction in SDL Trados Studio projects using projectTermExtract OpenExchange application (by Paul Filkin, SDL) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

Every now and then I see an application and I think… this one is going to be a game changer for Studio users. There have been a few, but the top two for me have been the “SDLXLIFF to Legacy Converter” and the “Glossary Converter.” So what about the third? ...

Stanislav Okhvat's insight:
Paul Filkin describes a new OpenExchange app called projectTermExtract which makes it possible to extract one-word terms from a Studio project or selected documents and generate a new term base from these words after they are translated.

Iris Optical Character Recognition for PDF translation in SDL Trados Studio 2017 SR1 (by Paul Filkin, SDL) | Translator Tools | Scoop.it
I'm back on the topic of PDF support!  I have written about this a few times in the past with "I thought Studio could handle a PDF?" and "Handling PDFs… is there a best way?", and this could give people the impression I'm a fan of translating PDF files.  But I'm not!  If I was…
Stanislav Okhvat's insight:
Paul Filkin talks about a new option for PDF document translation available in SDL Trados Studio 2017 SR1 (Service Release 1). It uses optical character recognition software called ReadIris which supports as many as 134 languages compared with 14 languages supported by Solid Documents OCR engine which has been integrated into Studio for some time. Paul explains how to use this option and shows the process in a video.

I've always had a secret desire to be able to program computers... the problem is it's not something you can do just like that!  I can recall starting off with a Commodore PET 2001 some time in the late 70's and I can remember how enjoyable it was to be able to create simple scripts…

Paul Filkin explains how Autohotkey can be used to automate some common multi-step operations within SDL Trados Studio (and, in fact, other CAT tools), and provides some useful links, including a link to the new AutoHotkey forum in the SDL TP Community where some ready-made Autohotkey scripts can be found.

TransTools 3.16: new option to remove extra tags from Microsoft Word documents

TransTools 3.16: new option to remove extra tags from Microsoft Word documents | Translator Tools | Scoop.it

TransTools v.3.16 has been released.

The new version can remove additional tags in Word documents that contain text written with “symbol fonts” such as Symbol, Wingdings, etc. Symbols from such fonts are similar to images and so they are displayed as tags in CAT tools, making them difficult to understand and use in the translated text. The new option finds the majority of symbols from standard symbol fonts and replaces them with readable characters from standard fonts, reducing the number of tags and improving readability in your CAT tool.

The latest version also contains other tag cleaning features introduced in TransTools v.3.15 (see http://www.translatortools.net/news/features_v3.15.html).
