Islamabad—Launching ceremony of Urdu- Russian Dictionary was held here with the collaboration of Pakistan Academy of Sciences and National Language Authority. The dictionary was compiled by Tashmirza Khalmirzaev, ex-diplomat and a literate person. The ceremony was attended by senior and junior diplomats of former soviet states; literate and well known personalities from different spheres of life.

Dr. Anwaar Ahmed and other officers of NLA and PAS warmly received the guests at the entry of the hall. Pakistan‘s Nuclear Scientist and a well-known personality Dr. A.Q Khan was the guest of honour who was accompanied by other well-known personalities.

Dr. Anwaar Ahmed appreciated the efforts of Mr. Tashmirza and heartedly congratulated him on this great achievement. He putted some light on the roles & responsibilities of National Language Authority and how it is progressing even in the difficult situations. He also drew the sketch how the dictionary was compiled in difficult circumstances and how much efforts were required to get the job done.

In his speech, Dr. A.Q Khan told that he is very glad for the achievement and job done by Mr. Tashmirza and congratulated him on this tremendous contribution to both languages Urdu and Russian. He revealed the fact that he knows Mr. Tashmirza since 30 years and met him in the embassy on his return from abroad. Dr. Khan also put light on his relations with scientists of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and his journey in different cities of these beautiful countries. He also threw light on the difficulties; Mr. Tashmirza faced during the compilation of the dictionary and appreciated his determination and enthusiasm for completion of the job. Mr. Khan also appreciated the role of National Language Authority and Pakistan Science Academy which they played in compilation of the dictionary and appreciated the support and assistance they provided to Mr. Tashmirza.

In his speech Mr. Tashirza, revealed the fact that he had been struggling for compilation of this dictionary since long. He tried to publish it in Russia but there was no support received and it was not possible for him to publish it. He really appreciated the role, support and assistance of National Language Authority and Pakistan Science Academy who made it possible to compile and publish the dictionary.

Uzbek schola­r Dr Tashmi­rza Khalmi­rzaev compil­ed the dictio­nary.

ISLAMABAD: The world’s first Urdu-Russian dictionary, compiled by Uzbek scholar Dr Tashmirza Khalmirzaev in a record three months, was launched here on Wednesday.
Addressing the gathering at the launch ceremony, Khalmirzaev termed the day ‘unforgettable’, saying “it was my life’s mission to compile an Urdu-Russian dictionary to help speakers of both languages come closer.”
He thanked his Pakistani counterparts for their help in achieving the task in a record time.
“I especially want to thank Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan for his assistance… It is an honour for me that Dr Qadeer has called me a close friend,” said Khalmirzaev.

The 22-volume Urdu dictionary has gained international recognition as a world class dictionary.

The young generation in Pakistan, that has grown up using SMS as the predominant means of written communication, is using Latin script to write Urdu.
