Free Technology for Teachers: Ten Tools for Teaching With YouTube Videos

Free Technology for Teachers: Ten Tools for Teaching With YouTube Videos | Transforming Schools | Scoop.it
If you can get past the distraction of cute animal videos, video game highlights, and other nonsense, you can find excellent educational videos on YouTube. But even then it's not enough to just share the video with your students either in your classroom or online. When sharing videos with students in an online format, add some questions for them to answer or ideas for them to consider as they watch. Here are five tools that are good for doing that.

Three Ways AI is Changing Education - INC.com

Three Ways AI is Changing Education - INC.com | Transforming Schools | Scoop.it
Technology is everywhere, and one of the most promising new technologies of the age is artificial intelligence and its sister technology machine learning. AI and machine learning work together to make it easier than ever before to process large amounts of data. It's the same thing that Netflix uses to provide personalized recommendations based on the viewing data of every single user on the site.

Now, this might not sound like it has much to do with the field of education, but if you'll bear with us then we think you might just be surprised. In fact, AI and education go together like chalk and a chalkboard, and the rising new technology might just be what we need to overhaul the education system and to make sure that every pupil is given the best possible shot at academic success.

Here are just three of the main ways that artificial intelligence is set to come along and change the way we look at education.

Can an AR and VR Pilot Program From Google Prepare Kids for Future Careers? | EdSurge News

Can an AR and VR Pilot Program From Google Prepare Kids for Future Careers? | EdSurge News | Transforming Schools | Scoop.it

"Virtual reality has been the driving force behind Google’s Expeditions app since it launched three years ago. And recently it’s added another layer of “reality” to the virtual field trip tool—AR, or augmented reality to be precise, which take the form of features such as narration, annotations, and a new “solo mode,” going on virtual trips without a guide.

This past school year Google says over one million students have used the AR tools as part of the company’s Expeditions Pioneer Program. In New York City, 99 different schools experimented with the program for the first time, giving students an up-close look at everything from famous world landmarks to the human body."

Computational Thinking ≠ Coding – Tech-Based Teaching: Computational Thinking in the Classroom

Computational Thinking ≠ Coding – Tech-Based Teaching: Computational Thinking in the Classroom | Transforming Schools | Scoop.it

"Coding is the enemy of computational thinking,” Stephen Wolfram announced during his keynote at the Building Learning Communities® Education Conference.

What was remarkable about this comment were the agreeable nods from the crowd. It seemed there was a collective understanding to this notion, and perhaps one that needed further reflection.

This year, the conference had several sessions focusing on computational thinking (which, I might add, is incredibly encouraging to see), and in each one I attended, a special note was added: “Coding and computational thinking are not synonymous.”"

Google's VR Tour Creator is one of my favorite media creation tools. Since its launch in May of this year I have shown it to hundreds of teachers in-person and even more in videos and webinars. I love it because it empowers students to make their own virtual reality experiences rather than just consuming virtual reality content. Here are five ideas for VR creation projects for students.

10 Apps Teens are Using that Parents Need to Know - Appsolutely April

10 Apps Teens are Using that Parents Need to Know - Appsolutely April | Transforming Schools | Scoop.it
Not all social apps are bad. Most of the apps our kids use are truly an extension of your child’s “real world” social life. For the most part, our kids talk to people they only talk to in “real life.” With the influence of technology in our kids social lives, we can’t panic or over think every single thing, but we do need to empower each other and be aware of what our kids are doing when they are online and engaged in these apps. We teach our children how to swim so they don’t drown and the same is true for online social behaviors. We have to talk to our kids and teach them how to navigate through this online world. I believe strongly in not blocking everything, but in my opinion, there are certain apps that are just off-limits and I will share those with you in this post. The problem in most cases is that parents just don’t know how bad some of these apps can really be. The truth is told so perfectly by Kevin Honeycutt when he says, “Our kids are growing up on a digital playground and no one is on recess duty.” So true.
