2010-2011 EQAO Cohort Data Visualization: Reading Assessment

2010-2011 EQAO Cohort Data Visualization: Reading Assessment | transformative learning | Scoop.it

"Research is only effective if the people it seeks to impact understand it." ~Chris Conley

I tend to think that research is only effective if the people who seek to make an impact understand it [completely]. It is not usually the case that those being impacted are the people seeking to understand or use the research.

Having said that, Chris's data visualization of the 2010-2011 EQAO Cohort: Reading Assessment is immensely helpful for understanding the comlexity of this large amount of information. My concern is the impact it will inadvertently have.

Don't get me wrong, this is such an amazing data visualization, I think everyone interested in education should see it (thus the reason for me Scooping it) and in doing so I must attach a clause. It is an incomplete picture, which has become all too common in the achievement and accountability focus of today's system of education. I certainly wouldn't go so far as to say this dynamic presentation 'lies' to us (see Chris's post One Message, Two Meanings), yet this single strain of data from a larger set, distorts the meaning behind the broader picture which is already having devastating effects on our students.

Chris points out that EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office) information is not only used to summarize the achievement of students (an issue I won't touch upon here), but is also used to "inform planning and decision-making." I'm in general agreement with EFTO's position with respect to standardized tests; among other things they lead to a "disproportionate focus on numeracy and literacy at the expense of [all other subjects] (http://www.etfo.ca/issuesineducation/eqaotesting/pages/default.aspx). Nevertheless, I believe EQAO, flawed as it is, goes to great lengths to ensure the responsible use of it's data by including a number of indicators associated with this data set. I caution that by not focusing on all of the data available (an oversight or time constraint I hope) Chris has elevated the status, of already narrowly focused, reading scores as a primary indicator of student success by making them, and only them, understandable to a greater number of people.

Again, I return to reinforce the conceptual value of the visualization for understanding the data it contains. It is a powerfully effective and a highly sophisticated display of data. Yet, the content is two steps backwards with respect to indicators of success (i.e. the joy of reading, writing [and dare I say learning overall]) in the name of a single step forward for technological respresentation of an already narrow strand of statistics.

What I'm getting at here is that Chris's intent to simplify vast amounts of data is noble and that the people who seek to use it take into consideration that it is only a partial account of a much larger picture (that hopefully Chris will someday simplify).

I leave you with the words of Professor Joel Westheimer, University of Ottawa, to remember why many of us got into this profession, to "help kids think for themselves and make meaning of the world."
