Interviewing at the MLA Convention: How to Prepare and Strategies for Success

Interviewing at the MLA Convention: How to Prepare and Strategies for Success | AcademicTraining | Scoop.it

With approximately 28,000 members who live in the U.S., Canada, and nearly 100 other countries, the MLA is one of the world's largest scholarly associations. It facilitates intellectual exchanges among its members, most of whom are college and university faculty members or graduate students. There are also more than a hundred secondary school teachers and many independent scholars in the association.

I know many of you are working in higher education or seeking to do so. the upcoming conference in Vancouver, British Columbia (January 8-11-2015)  looks to be an exceptional networking and interviewing opportunity.  Those of you with online teaching skills arrive at the interview process with a 21st century understanding of education.  Still, getting to the interview stage requires persistence, connections, and yes... face to face interaction.  It's a virtual work world most of the time, but person to person is where the action is (at least some of the time).

Be sure to visit the career resources of the MLA.

How the letters of the alphabet got their names

How the letters of the alphabet got their names | AcademicTraining | Scoop.it
There seems to be little predictability to the English names for the letters of the alphabet, to say nothing of the names of letters in other languages. Some begin with an e-as-in-egg sound (eff, ell); some end in an ee sound (tee, dee); and others have no obvious rhyme or reason to them at all. How did they get that way?

8 YouTube Tools to Help Learn English | PeacheyPublications.com | AcademicTraining | Scoop.it
It always amazes me that despite being the world’s largest video library, YouTube is still blocked or banned in many educational institutions. As a resource for learning about almost anything, but particularly for language learning it is an incredibly valuable tool and a tool that many third party companies have started to build on and exploit to make its use easier and more engaging.

Many tools that can help educators exploit the learning potential of YouTube with a particular focus on English language learning. I hope you can enjoy these tools and if you do work in an institution where YouTube is still blocked perhaps you can use this article to help persuade the people responsible that the benefits of making the resource available far outweigh the manageable risks that it can create.
