NAFTA = North America Free Trade Agreement

Jacob Crowell's curator insight, October 15, 2014 1:56 PM

This TTP agreement seems to be very similar to NAFTA, which means it will have many of the same drawbacks. Many US small businesses will be hurt as larger corporations can easily use foreign markets to find cheap labor and production, environmental standards will be ignored, and globalization will become more and more powerful. Also open markets and easier trade agreements have increased production and lowered costs, it has cost many their lively hoods. Even though this TTP seems like a way to reignited the US economy, it will most likely have the same negative consequences of NAFTA. Instead of finding new ways to grow the economy of North America, it seems the governments are doubling down on a policy that worked only to a certain extent.

The China-backed FTAAP was met with resistance from the United States (and Japan) which is propelling its own trade pact—TPP in the region, a pact that doesn't include China. It remains to be seen whether the China-backed free-trade initiative will bring tangible benefits to the APEC member countries.
