Avec un plateau de speakers internationaux toujours très relevé, la 3ème édition de ce TEDx sera à n’en pas douter un des RDV incontournables du transmedia en Europe pour cette rentrée. There are few actions in life more humbling than buying a home. Not the signing--that’s easy--but everything before. Digging through AOL-era websites while punching hypothetical salaries into mortgage calculators, injecting your poor Macbook with another fat syringe of Russian spyware at every click of the “OK” button. You’re capable--incredible, even--at every part of your professional life. Then you go to do this thing that everyone else does, and you’re starting from zero....

Chirp app to 'make phones sing' enables proximity sharing

Chirp app to 'make phones sing' enables proximity sharing | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
A new UK-developed app allows users to send files and weblinks to each other's smartphones via "digital birdsong".

An app that transmits data via a burst of "digital birdsong" aims to simplify the way users share images and other files between smartphones.

Chirp plays a two-second long noise that sounds as if it was made by a robotic bird. When heard by other devices it triggers a download.

The software was developed by Animal Systems, a spin-off business from University College London (UCL).

It is free to use, but companies will be charged a fee for add-on services.

Conducttr helps producers develop coherence, control and intelligence in multi-platform narratives

By Rosie Lavan « The Pixel Report

Cross-platform narratives are about multiplicity, opening up both a story and an experience for users. However, their success lies in the structure and control of their design, and it is precisely this support and coherence which Transmedia Storyteller has set out to provide with its service, Conducttr.

Conducttr is the first service from Transmedia Storyteller, a company which provides cross-platform experiences and marketing. Described as “a pervasive entertainment platform”, Conducttr enables cross-platform, interactive social entertainment to be designed, managed, delivered and measured. Developed with the full range of companies and individuals working in this field in mind – from interactive agencies to independent filmmakers – Conducttr monitors content delivered online, offline and via mobile devices, feeding back to content creators about audience behaviour and preferences, and yet the audience never knows it’s there.....

One-bit Internet: The iPad is/isn't a content creation device

One-bit Internet: The iPad is/isn't a content creation device | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

In the conclusion to my Retina MacBook repairability post, I wrote: \"on the Internet, it often seems that everything must be compressed to a one-bit image: black or white, triumph or catastrophe, the very best or the absolute worst."

So it goes for the eternal debate over whether the iPad is a "content consumption" or "content creation" device -- a debate given fresh impetus by the new round of starting to sound a bit credible rumors of a 7.85" iPad. The theory goes is that the 10" iPad will be for content creation and the 7.85" one for content consumption, like there's some sort of absolute line in the sand you cross at 9" screen size....

WOW. Study: Twitter analysis can be used to detect psychopathy (Wired UK)

WOW. Study: Twitter analysis can be used to detect psychopathy (Wired UK) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

A multi-disciplinary team of researchers has been studying whether it's possible to detect psychopathy in people's tweets. Results suggest that in certain contexts, personality prediction through social media can perform with a "reasonably high degree of accuracy".

Computer scientists at Florida Atlantic University, the Online Privacy Foundation and Kaggle teamed up to see whether it was possible to identify the "Dark Triad" of psychopathy, narcissism and Machiavellianism through people's Twitter usage. The team will be presenting the research on 29 July at Defcon in Las Vegas.

The research was triggered by a paper from Cornell University that examined the speech patterns of known psychopaths describing their crimes. That study had found that pyschopaths tend to use more conjunctions like "because", "since" or "so that". They also used twice as many words relating to physical needs such as food, sex or money, while non-psychopaths used more words about social needs such as family and spirituality. Psychopaths were also more likely to use the past tense and be less fluent in their speech, using more "ums" and "uhs".

Thought Provoking! Is Minecraft the Metaverse? « My Life Scoop

Thought Provoking! Is Minecraft the Metaverse? « My Life Scoop | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Minecraft is the hugely popular “sandbox” game in which players can wander around a virtual planet (with a virtual surface area eight times that of Earth!), mine minerals, harvest timber, and build things out of the resources they collect. Most players construct houses, gardens, paths, and walls, but some players make immense recreations of structures like the Notre Dame and the USS Enterprise, or build virtual computers and working GameBoys.

When I started playing Minecraft with my kids last year, I immediately thought of the Metaverse — the shared virtual reality system in Neal Stephenson’s now-classic 1992 science fiction novel, Snow Crash. The Metaverse was a simulated universe where people could buy or rent virtual real estate and set up a business or a home-away-from-home, furnishing it with virtual goods that cost real money. “Minecraft is the first big step towards they Metaverse,” I thought...

The horrifying and tragic news of the shooting in Aurora, Colorado this weekend requires some degree of reflection on our parts. Picturebooks and Transmedia Design (Part 1) - Transmedia Digest

Ensuring the media used in a transmedia project don’t “step” on each other and the overall story is the biggest challenges for storytellers.

...Over the few blog posts, I’m going to take a look at what we can learn from picturebooks in particular and how we can apply those lessons to the design of transmedia narratives. The principles for integrating text and images in a picturebook can be readily applied to transmedia narratives that include audio, images, and other forms of communication.

The traditional approach to using text and images is for one to be dominent and the other to play a supporting role. In their book Children’s Picturebooks: The Art of Visual Storytelling authors Martin Salisbury and Morag Styles note:

In most contexts, illustration provides a visual accompaniment to words, a prompt or aid to the imagination that aims to augment the overall experience of the book. (pg. 89)...
