Burberry merges digital and physical worlds with London flagship store

Burberry merges digital and physical worlds with London flagship store | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

...Burberry has launched a flagship store in London’s Regent Street, which merges the physical and digital worlds of Burberry in an engaging brand experience.

Burberry’s fearless strategy to invest in creating entertainment and a focus on ensuring the brand is cultural relevant, have transformed it from a stuffy luxury brand to a modern, relevant and very hip Luxury brand.

The aim is to “seamlessly blur the physical and digital worlds” and at the core of this idea is the use of art and entertainment to enhance the Burberry brand experience across all channels.

In a shocking twist the store, which Burberry calls “a celebration of British design and craftsmanship”, has been modeled on the Burberry.com site and was designed to be a physical manifestion of the online experience...."

Exclusive: 'Veronica Mars' creator Rob Thomas on the wildly successful Kickstarter movie campaign

Exclusive: 'Veronica Mars' creator Rob Thomas on the wildly successful Kickstarter movie campaign | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

HitFixs Alan Sepinwall interviews Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas about the successful, unprecedented campaign to revive the Kristen Bell detective series as a movie funded by Kickstarter donations....

"When you started out on this project, the assumption was that Warner Bros. would not kick in any money for production, and that you would have to make it work on whatever you raised from Kickstarter. Has that changed at all, given the success and all the attention the campaign has received?

Rob Thomas: Warner Bros. has not promised us any amount of money. There is a chance where, if we needed something, and there wasn't enough money in the budget, like one more actor deal, they've talked like they're a partner, and (said) 'We'll make sure we'll make a terrific movie.' But there's absolutely no doubt that the more money we make, the bigger and better movie it's going to be. I just don't think they would have let us make a cheap movie. I stop and think that if we had just made $2 million, after we paid for t-shirts and processing, it would have been a $1.4 million movie. That would've been really hard, and a really scaled-down movie. I don't think we're going to be in that position. Warner Bros., they're certainly handling all the other big ticket expensive items, like distribution and promotion. So they're pulling their share...."

Kickstarting Veronica Mars: A Conversation About the Future of Television (Part Three)

Kickstarting Veronica Mars: A Conversation About the Future of Television (Part Three) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Henry Jenkins:

Suzanne, I share some of your concerns about the ways that fan power is being evaluated here primarily in terms of economic capital. Interestingly, the Veronica Mars campaign was preceded by another effort — David Fincher’s effort to raise funds to produce an animated film based on Eric Powell’s cult comic book series, The Goon. This project had set a goal of raising $400,000 in order to fund a story reel as proof of concept for a proposed feature film, and instead, they raised 441,900 from 7,576 backers, which was, as of November, a record-breaker for the micro-funding company, now dramatically surpassed by the Veronica Mars juggernaut. At the time, there was considerable pushback from fans who felt that these funds should be raised by the studio through traditional means rather than tapping the fan network for investments that would be repaid through merchandise but not through either revenue or creative control...

"...And, then, we have seen Kickstarter emerge as a platform that, with the example of Veronica Mars, has demonstrated the possibilities of fan support pushing a once canceled program back into production — in this case for the big screen. And for the Veronica Mars scheme to work, we have to assume there were behind the scenes discussions between Rob Thomas and Warner Brothers (which still owns the rights to Veronica Mars) that would allow them some basis of proceeding. We now are hearing that a range of other producers and show-runners are starting to explore whether they might deploy similar tactics to gain a second chance for their passion projects.

This week, I have gathered together three friends, who bring different kinds of expertise to thinking about the short term and long term implications of these developments...."

Somethin' Else markets multi-platform software for TV drama #transmedia | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"Somethin’ Else has developed a multi-platform storytelling kit, Story Farm, based on its work for Company Pictures' Skins drama on Channel 4.

The kit is a software platform, together with a package of strategic and support services, designed to give dramas or soaps an integrated transmedia aspect, using web-based platforms and social media.

Somethin’ Else is taking Story Farm to MIPTV, where it is looking to license it to producers, broadcasters and brands.

The Story Farm software enables the writing, scheduling and publishing of content to digital platforms. It is designed to be used by story editors and scriptwriters, including importing from scriptwriting software. Images and video can also be loaded on directly by the production team.

The system contains tools designed to track content through broadcasters’ compliance processes. It also has a comprehensive verification system to ensure smooth scheduling and commercial-grade reliability for time-sensitive publishing, such as simultaneously with television shows...."

The Apple patent, conversely, describes a system in which device hardware is implemented to virtually move a user through street-level imagery. You could in theory navigate through a virtual landscape by simply moving your smartphone around in a series of predetermined directions.

The patent filing also describes the Street View-like product being able to communicate between devices, meaning you could place a pair ofsmartphones side-by-side for a wider panoramic range. It also describes users being able to virtually enter buildings, where internal panorama displays would take over....'

Following behind, Twitter has 30 percent of the vote, while 17 percent of teens say that Instagram is the most important social network.

What’s notable, however, is that interest in Facebook seems to be declining heavily among teens. Though teens still dub Facebook their most important socialnetwork, Piper Jaffray reports that the numbers are down regarding how many teens see Facebook as the most important social media website..."

"...On a second and related point, you all make a compelling case for how distribution on Netflix, or similar platforms, might help reshape industrial investments in media properties, encourage experimentation with transmedia or non-linear textualities, and cater to pre-existing fannish consumption patterns such as binge watching. Our conceptual understanding of what “television” is (who produces and distributes it, and where, when and how we consume it) continues to be radically reimagined in the post-network era.  Within the Netflix television model, the television temporalities of seriality and seasonality are effectively eradicated. This isn’t a bad thing, necessarily, but I do wonder how these new “telelvision” models might fundamentally alter our conception of television fandom...."

"...I’m a frequent donor to Kickstarter campaigns, especially those like Womanthology or Tropes Vs. Women in Video Games that are attempting to make a transformative intervention into media industries and fannish subcultures that can be unwelcoming to women.  I’m also all for using Kickstarter to launch creator-owned projects.  For example, I get why Batgirl writer Gail Simone, who was recently fired and rehired by DC Comics after a massive pushback from fans, would want to kickstart a graphic novel where she’ll have full control over the creative direction and, more importantly, the intellectual property rights. I’ll probably pull the trigger and donate to the Veronica Mars movie before the days tick down to zero…or, let’s be realistic, probably before the end of this conversation.  But it’s not because I want a t-shirt, or a digital download of the finished product from Flixter, Warner Bros.’ proprietary video platform.  What I want is information, however filtered through Warner Bros. publicity brass that it might be, about how this grand experiment is playing out, and to see if fans are addressed primarily as partners, or promotional agents...."
