US Travelers Are Heavy Users of Loyalty Programs - eMarketer | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it
Loyalty programs are closely associated with the travel industry in the public’s mind (see: frequent flier miles)—and for good reason. New data from Phocuswright and Acxiom found that four in five US travelers were members of some type of travel-related loyalty program.

Naturally, the point of such programs is to help drive revenues and add to the bottom line. eMarketer estimates that digital travel sales in the US will total $189.62 billion this year, with that figure growing to $219.69 billion by 2021.

How smell is the new way to capture travellers’ attention

How smell is the new way to capture travellers’ attention | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it

New research has revealed that two-thirds of Australians wish they could do more than take photos o remember their holidays. The research, commissioned by Cathay Pacific, shows that despite the average Aussie traveller snapping on average 33 pictures a day, 78 per cent of Aussies believe we’re in real danger of missing out because we’re too focused on taking photos or posting on social media.Seven out of ten people surveyed wished they had more ways to remember their holiday experiences. This ‘snap and dash’ culture means thousands of Aussies are spending too much time capturing and revisiting their holiday through a screen, and are neglecting their other senses, including their most powerful and evocative – the sense of smell. Australian tourists rethink travel plans as terrorism fears worsen

Australian tourists rethink travel plans as terrorism fears worsen | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it

Four in five (84%) Australians fear flying with at least half blaming terrorism, finder.com.au, the site that compares virtually everything, has revealed. Terrorist attacks on planes including the aircraft being hijacked is the major reason why Australians fear taking-off – instilling fear in 45% of Aussie jetsetters, according to a finder.com.au survey of 2,005 Australians. And it’s not just attacks in the air they are worried about. High profile terrorist incidents in cities such as London, Berlin, Paris, Nice and most recently Barcelona have made Australians wary about traveling in Europe. The number of Australians visiting France dropped 7% in the 12 months to July 2017, Germany by 5% and the number of those heading to the UK dropped by 1%. Find out more.

Airbnb Study: Airbnb’s reputational system builds trust & overcomes biases

Airbnb Study: Airbnb’s reputational system builds trust & overcomes biases | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it
But, tonight, approximately 2 million people are staying at an Airbnb, and we currently have 4 million listings available in over 191 countries—more than the five biggest hotel chains combined.

This global growth cannot happen without a strong foundation in trust, which is why I set out—along with my co-authors at Stanford—to better understand the effects of what I believed to be one of Airbnb’s core drivers of trust: our robust reputational system comprised of our authentic user-generated reviews and star ratings.
