Modern Beach Cottage With Unobstructed Views of the Atlantic Ocean | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it

This picturesque beach cottage was designed by Roger Marvel Architects and is located in Amagansett, New York. Whaler’s Lane Residence is a project consisting of a renovation and expansion of an existing building overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The new additions include a swimming pool, jacuzzi, and trellis, kitchen, second floor bedroom, and terrace.

Here is a short description from the architects: “The original oceanfront beach cottage that occupied the site was reutilized conceptually for the project by maintaining similar materials and profiles to create a contextual residence. This property includes a large sand dune, that protects the project from strong winds, and public beach activity alike. The Landscaping has been accomplished with native materials and maintained with erosion control methods including Long wooden beach palates and boardwalks used to traverse the dune to the beach and guest house“.

California’s Landmark Clean Car Mandate: How It Works and What It Means | InsideClimate News

California’s Landmark Clean Car Mandate: How It Works and What It Means | InsideClimate News | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it

If all goes as planned, more than a million ultra-clean cars will be zipping around California in the next decade, a 30-fold increase from today, thanks to tough new rules recently approved by state regulators.

It's not the first time the nation has set its sights on the million-mark for green vehicles. In 2009 President Obama pledged to put a million plug-in cars on U.S. roads by 2015.

But the president had no regulatory muscle to try to enforce his goal. And three years later there are fewer than 20,000 all-electric and plug-ins in the U.S., says Plug-In America, a San Francisco advocacy group.

Undaunted, California believes its clean car ambitions will be easily met because 12 of the world's leading carmakers helped craft its new rules and because the industry has six years to begin complying with them. The program is the first in the nation to regulate the kinds of vehicles to be sold in a state auto market...

Mosewich House by D’Arcy Jones Design

Mosewich House by D’Arcy Jones Design | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it

This functional and inviting family house is perched on the edge of a steep slope in a suburban setting. Existing ponderosa pines, bunch-grass and sagebrush were carefully preserved by siting the house away from the street.

A private, sunny courtyard merges the kitchen and dining areas with the landscape. Intimate views of vegetation and exposed rock are a welcome contrast to long views towards the river valley below.

A robust, dark tinted stucco mass anchors the house to the ground, morphing as one continuous mass to create courtyard walls, terraces, fireplace chimneys and structural shear-walls. Opposite, yet never quite touching, is a muted stucco mass bending and wrapping asymmetrically to frame dramatic views. Interior spaces are defined by modulating the voids between these two contrasting stucco masses. When these stucco masses extend inside the house, the threshold is defined with floor-to-ceiling glass, translucent in some locations for privacy.

Deep cantilevered overhangs provide both shade and upper level rock gardens. Carefully located operable windows provide effective cross-ventilation, eliminating reliance on air-conditioning...

Used Electric Car Batteries Could Be Crucial In Future Energy Storage | PSFK

Used Electric Car Batteries Could Be Crucial In Future Energy Storage | PSFK | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it

Nissan North America, ABB, 4R Energy and Sumitomo Corporation of America have formed a partnership to evaluate whether used electric car batteries could provide residential and commercial energy storage solutions and back-up power sources, making electric vehicles even more sustainable. Their aim is to develop a prototype to effectively reuse lithium-ion batteries taken from the Nissan LEAF.

As electric vehicle batteries have up to 70% capacity remaining after 10 years of use, they can be used beyond the lifetime of the vehicle for other applications. The companies are going to test their use in smart-grid energy management systems and battery energy storage...

Maleny House by Bark Design Architects

Maleny House by Bark Design Architects | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it

The ‘Glass House Mountain House’ in Maleny, celebrates its site, perched on the edge of the remnant rim of the Glass House range, as well as the essence of its place – ‘sky and mountains’. Translated into a place of ‘glass and stone’ inextricably connected to its landscape it has qualities of being anchored, robust and earthbound as well as being transparent, light and floating.

Memorable to the experience is the ‘sanctuary’ of the courtyard space, whose edges are defined by ambiguous indoor outdoor thresholds of the transparent internal spaces, sitting between the refuge of a monumental basalt ‘Garden Wall’ and the broader natural volcanic landscape. Engaging with existing topography, orientation, views and vegetation, the house balances economy and fine craft.

It celebrates economical finishes, directness, authenticity, natural, textured and unadorned surfaces which are embroidered with highly crafted timber elements and pieces. Surfaces, finishes and details exhibit the Japanese concept of wabi sabi – the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete, allowed to weather and evolve with time...

"Can you imagine today’s world without location-based technology? It’s everywhere—in augmented reality apps for smartphones, GPS systems in our cars, urban transportation systems, and with public participation (ie. Gov 2.0) and visualisation web portals. In the past year, EngagingCities alone has dedicated over twenty posts to the subject of GIS in planning, with a 2012 location-based article series in the works as we speak. This being said, getting a handle on the multitude of planning related geospacial platforms and tools out there isn't easy, especially considering the rapid rate at which this technology is evolving." ...
