Whether you have recently made the decision to start a business or have been operating for several years now is a great time to look at ways to better promote and manage your business.  Today having an online presence is not a choice for most businesses it’s a must.  For the rest who have the choice, they’ll be in a stronger position if the sooner they take the leap.  The internet is full of offers of free apps and forums to market and manage businesses.

Social Media

By now everyone has heard all the hype around social media and how you can generate leads, connect with clients and improve your visibility.  Social media is far from static, users and trends are constantly changing. If you are looking at leveraging social media start with the basics and work your way out.  There are great tools that can track your stats such as content sharing and engagement.

The Basics:

Facebook and Twitter - the two places to begin if you are looking to plug your business into social media.  Creating an official Facebook Page and Twitter account for your business are must-dos.  Along with this if you already have personal accounts don’t be afraid to communicate about your business via your personal accounts.  Just remember to create a different persona for both entities. Encourage people already engaged with you to like or follow the official portals. One simple and effective way to do this is to offer exclusive deals on each of your official social media portals that cannot be accessed elsewhere.  This may come in the form of special coupons or give-aways.

Use Hootsuite to manage your social media.  It can automate your postings and spit out concise reports that will show you who you engaged with.  Hootsuite comes highly recommended for social media management.

Human Resources

Depending on the type of business you run Human Resources may consume a considerable portion of your time and financial resources.  If you are a sole proprietor who employs no-one you may not be concerned with HR otherwise if you have even 1 employee or semi-regular contractors take some time to get familiar with some of the great HR management tools available free of charge online.

Most cloud hosted Human Resources Information Systems offer from 15 to 60 day free trials for new registrations.  There are a few basic systems that offer free service.  I’ve recently been acquainted with one that is offering extended free service for 11 months on all new registrations.  The best HR offerings online do much more than just store and display your HR information.  They have useful tools such as digital timesheets and punch-clocks. Some offer digital filing cabinets.  Leapshot Humans, currently offering 11 free months for new accounts also incorporates a digital kanban feature along with great reporting and performance measurement tools. Going digital with Leapshot Humans will also open up their digital filing cabinet.  Imagine all those pieces of paper shredded and gone?  Next time you need to find a file just type a query in the search window and bingo.  The best digital tools make managing information easy peasey.

If you are considering converting paper files to digital, a huge consideration should be the volume of paper files you have to digitize.  Scan Whatever has a great 1-touch scanning application. It literally enables you to scan and save to the web with only one click of your mouse. Where most standard scanning applications require several clicks just to scan and save one file, Scan Whatever cuts through and saves you time and index finger cramps.

Submiting Press Releases

Circulating a press release is a great way to get the news of your business out there. Including backlinks to your business website can do wonders for generating web traffic and search engine optimization. Be sure to make your press release short and to the point.  In order for it to be news-worthy it needs to communicate something relevant, such as a new business launch, a limited time promotion or a business merger. There are tons of sites where you can post your press release for free.  Some of the best ones are:
