Tom's Teaching Technology
In my profession, i seem to constantly be reviewing and using new online resources. Some are brilliant, and others not so useful for my teaching. Initially, i was looking for a place to keep track of all the tools i find useful for my own teaching. At some point, it seemed to be a nice idea to share my ideas and experiences of using these tools with others. I hope you find something useful, if you do, feel free to hit the social networking buttons and share as much as you like. If i find a good app, or a great site, ill share it here.

Edmodo | Where Learning Happens | Sign up, Sign In

Edmodo provides a safe and easy way for your class to connect and collaborate, share content, and access homework, grades and school notices.
Thomas Allan's insight:

I'm sure most educators are aware of Edmodo, and i know that many use it regularly in their classrooms. I'm sure this is nothing new! What many people dont know, are the powerful resource sharing options that it possesses. Even if you never use it in your classes, there is a world of class resources, links and documents waiting to be explored through the networks of users. Make some connections, or check in to a teaching topic and have a look!

Weebly is the easiest way to create a website or blog

Weebly is the easiest way to create a website or blog | Tom's Teaching Technology | Scoop.it
Named one of TIME's 50 Best Websites, Weebly gives everyone a surprisingly easy way to create a unique site. Make a free website, blog or online store with our powerful website builder.
Thomas Allan's insight:

I have tried quite a few online web page editors, and weebly is by far my favourite. It allows powerful features, easy collaboration, free hosting (subdomain), easy blogging. The templates and graphics look fantastic. I use weebly for my personal sites, and in the classroom. Class blogs, student personal pages and resource blogs are just a few examples. A free account allows you to do most features, indeed all the core ones needed for getting a page on the web. There is a great mobile app, for Android and iOS. When you make a site, weebly makes a mobile device version for you in the background too. Its really fantastic. The only issues i have had stem from my very limited bandwidth, and the need to keep my browser regularly updated. The issues i have had with loading, have been easily resolved by updating Firefox. A wonderful tool, with paid upgrades to Pro version features if you feel the need.

Information can be filtered by concepts, links, images, video etc. Mindmaps can be shared using the usual methods. Instagrok also generates a quiz to check understanding from the search results. A great new way to search, highly recommended. Its going in my list of favourites.

bitly | ♥ your bitmarks
Thomas Allan's insight:
I use this all the time to shorten and save links. Some web links are far too long to write on a board, or get students to copy down. Quickly change them to something simple with Bitly. The address is customisable, so will appear in this format. bit.ly/tomsteachingtech. Once students get used to the bit.ly format, it makes life easier.

Smore - Design beautiful online flyers and publish instantly

Smore - Design beautiful online flyers and publish instantly | Tom's Teaching Technology | Scoop.it
The days of posting a flyer around the neighborhood are over. Smore helps you create amazing pages that you'd be proud to share.
Thomas Allan's insight:

I can't recommend Smore enough. It has taken over my classroom as the go-to method of creating posters and visual displays. When students are researching a topic and presenting it in a poster form, this is a brilliant way of speeding up the process, and engaging the class. They can add interactives, adio, video and everything else. The posters look fantastic, and can be easily shared with me via Edmodo or other links. It's paperless, and because the templates already look fantastic, the kids spend more time dealing with the content, rather than wasting time colouring in headings. I think its a winner!
