Split-screen magic from Emily Davidson - this is some pretty stunning Vivaldi

On 4th March 1678, one of the greatest classical composers was born.

His compositional output ranged from over 500 instrumental concertos to opera and sacred choral works, and greatly influenced the likes of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Many of his compositions were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi was employed from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to 1740.

Another female musician continuing to play Vivaldi's spectacular music is cellist Emily Davidson, who takes on the challenge of playing BOTH the cello and continuo parts in many of his works. In the video below, she plays the first movement of his gorgeous Cello Sonata no. 5 in E minor.

Vivaldi Recomposed by Max Richter ≧◠ᴥ◠≦✊

Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi – The Four Seasons is the 2012 album by neo-classical composer Max Richter, released on August 31, 2012 on Universal Classics and Jazz (Germany), a division of Universal Music Group, and Deutsche Grammophon.

The album is a complete recomposition and reinterpretation of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.

The album is a collaboration between Max Richter, the violinist Daniel Hope, the Konzerthaus Kammerorchester Berlin symphony orchestra, and the conductor André de Ridder.

On the album, Hope plays the "Ex-Lipinski" violin, an instrument made by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù in 1742 and made available to the violinist by a German family who asked to remain anonymous.

Musician Max Richter has given The Four Seasons an avant-garde update. Then he had to find an orchestra who could play it

VIVALDI EDITION... Liner notes, sung texts (p.24), full tracklist (p.56)

The period in which Vivaldi was perfecting his virtuoso violin technique coincided with the years in which he wrote his first instrumental compositions.

In those days the first work to be printed often represented not only proof of maturity and membership of the circle of composers, but also the most corrected and perfected of a lifetime’s publications.

Indeed, the first printed edition was often postponed until the composer felt he had reached the desired quality standard. The fact that Vivaldi chose to remain within the confines of a glorious tradition implied the further challenge of dealing with the most widespread genre of the period: the trio sonata.

The yardstick for all composers was clearly Corelli’s output, which comprised four ‘monumental’ collections of perfectly structured sonatas. Other composers from the Venice area had also opted to address the same model in their first works, including Antonio Caldara, Giorgio Gentili and Tommaso Albinoni...

VIVALDI: "Four Seasons" Sonnets texts in Italian & English

VIVALDI: "Four Seasons" Sonnets texts in Italian & English | To the ingenious "Red Priest" of Baroque | Scoop.it

As a descriptive basis for his Four Seasons, Vivaldi took four Sonnets, apparently written by himself. Each of the four sonnets is expressed in a concerto, which in turn is divided into three phrases or ideas, reflected in the three movements (fast-slow-fast) of each concerto.

The published scores (by Estienne Roger of Amsterdam in 1725) are marked to indicate which musical passages are representative of which verses of the sonnet.

It is advisable, at least during the first few hearings, to follow the sonnets and music together, for they are bound up with one another to an extent rarely heard in any other programmatic pieces either of the baroque period or subsequently.

ANALYSIS AND REHEARSAL CONSIDERATIO ON ANTONIO VIVALDI’S GLORIA – RV 589

This report presents the biography of the composer Antonio Vivaldi, background of his composition Gloria, musical characteristics and analysis. Moreover, for a successful performance, rehearsal plans and techniques are also included. Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), one of the representative composers in Baroque period (1600-1750), wrote Gloria, in the early 18th century.

The composition date is still disputed between scholars. He composed three settings of the Gloria text: RV 588, 589 and 590. Out of them RV 589 is the most performed setting.

Gloria consists of twelve movements and orchestration of trumpet, oboe, strings, and continuo. Homophonic and polyphonic style is prevalent in this work.

In addition, focus should be placed on the harmonic suspensions, the flow of chromatic melodic lines and melismas.

For the recital, Chamber Singers consisted of 23 people who were the members of Concert Choir who have training focusing on clean and light tone with non-vibrato style.

“Antonio Vivaldi: Teaching and Composing for the Venetian Conservatories (Ospedali)” Kensy Berggren Music 214 – Baroque/Cl | To the ingenious "Red Priest" of Baroque | Scoop.it

Beginning in the late seventeenth century, Venice was home to four orphanages foryoung girls.

These institutions, the Ospedale della Pietà, Mendicanti, Incurabili, and Ospedaletto a St. Giovanni e Paolo, sought to raise the girls properly, and in doing so, music wasintegrated into the daily routine.

Girls in these conservatories had the opportunity to develop their musical talents and continue their success outside of the ospedali.

Musicians andcomposers, including Antonio Vivaldi, were hired as teachers and conductors of the ospedali’sperforming groups.

Thus, the Venetian Conservatories of the eighteenth century provided notonly a setting for the study of music, but a rich environment conducive to musical achievementof composers as well, an environment in which Antonio Vivaldi was inspired to compose workssuch as The Four Seasons for the flourishing talents of the girls at the ospedali...
