Traditionally, we went to school to attain knowledge. The smart kids knew that Columbus discovered America in 1492 and that the square root of 64 is eight. They studied diligently at home so that when the teacher asked a question they could shoot their hand up and be praised for their good work.

 

Today, however, teenagers carry far more information and computing power in their pockets than would ever fit in their heads. So the ability to retain knowledge and manipulate numbers with facility has become, to a large extent, outdated skills. So kids today need to learn how to understand systems and solve problems.

 

Fortunately, there are an increasing number of programs that are designed to do just that. At the college level, programs like Stanford's d.school teach design thinking and entrepreneurship classes have become standard in business school curriculums. More recently, a wide variety of secondary school level programs have begun to take hold and are giving students a leg up.

Teaching students good learning strategies would ensure that they know how to acquire new knowledge, which leads to improved learning outcomes, writes lead author Helen Askell-Williams of Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia. And studies bear this out. Askell-Williams cites as one example a recent finding by PISA, the Programme for International Student Assessment, which administers academic proficiency tests to students around the globe, and place American students in the mediocre middle. “Students who use appropriate strategies to understand and remember what they read, such as underlining important parts of the texts or discussing what they read with other people, perform at least 73 points higher in the PISA assessment—that is, one full proficiency level or nearly two full school years—than students who use these strategies the least,” the PISA report reads.

By far the most common research-type question I am asked today is some variation of: What is the impact of (this type of) technology on education? This is a fair question, to be sure. I often find that my reflexive reply to this seemingly simple question ("it depends: what are you trying to accomplish?") is often not viewed as tremendously satisfying by many people. While I increasingly come across academic papers which attempt to identify the 'impact' of the use of a particular educational technology or technology-enabled approach, I remain quite frustrated that there is comparatively little interest in a related but, from the perspective of the people who make huge and often very costly decisions about such stuff, far more important and practical questions related to understanding how or why this 'impact' occurred

Quick learners do not learn faster because they know some secret way of learning. In today's world we are all looking for the quick fix, for the easy solution and the fast way to get to what we want.

We get everything we desire instantly. Movies are on demand, TV shows can be watched for hours on end, and even products are delivered right to your front door.

Expecting the same thing for acquiring knowledge does not work. What "quick" learners do instead is they continue to work above and beyond what the rest of us do. Below I have listed some differences between quick learners vs. normal learners.

Technology changes everything. Disruption is the highest order and creative destruction is beautiful. Virtual reality is real. Inter-connected, on-demand, the uber-of-this and the Netflix-of-this-other-thing, bite sized and mobile, we Buzzfeed everything. Nothing is safe from our new normal.

Sure.

Based on the pre-washed, yet custom fit t-shirt slogans of Silicon Valley, we’re all on a one-way ride to technology nirvana – everything we want, everywhere we go, whatever we do will be easier, faster and more efficient.

Except schools.

Schools – the literally constructed spaces in which students learn and teachers teach – remain a monument to the way things were, impervious to upgrades and innovations. Pedagogy has changed, albeit slowly. And we do maintain a school calendar built around the harvest. Nonetheless, nary a school stands in this county without computers and many have high-capacity broadband internet access capable of delivering nearly any content at any time. Nearly every teacher of every subject at every education level has overwhelming access to resources, plans, concepts and teaching and assessment tools unimagined just 60 months ago.

Before they even reach kindergarten, children today are becoming intimately acquainted with mobile technology. When they arrive at their first organized school experiences, they are often already savvy on basic computers and mobile devices. If their parents used this technology correctly, these kids have had at least some exposure to phonics and math through learning websites, downloads and other applications. Seeing how prevalent technology usage is in young children, you would think that this is carried over to the classroom, right? However, research suggests that once these young learners enter a classroom, learning through tech “games” disappears.

From my point of view, there is no reason why we shouldn't beging using educational web tools specifically designed to help teachers and learners in and outside the classroom. These nine technological tools can help not only eliminate the overuse of paper, but also save time when creating, sharing, checking, and grading documents, tasks, activities, etc. All these adventages can benefit teachers and students and adding them into lessons takes only a curious teacher willing to enhance his or her practice while also finding new ways of keeping learners engaged and focused by making use of the devices students usually interact with these days.

Some nice suggestions here. I would also question whether students will continue to need to take exams given that so much data will be available regarding their course work and interaction with materials.

So may of these six aspect of hte future are already being implemented in fits and starts, as individual initiatives or school experiments. I am excited to be a part of hte early adopters!
