Application of electromagnetic waves as a solution to some agricultural problems

A review of some applications of electromagnetic waves in agriculture is presented. There are many applications in the literature which are categorized in two sections of post-harvest indoor and pre-harvest outdoor applications. Taking a look at the applications suggested, there are still works to be done to industrialize the method. However, the proposed method is promising in special cases when the cost and hazards of other methods are high.

Traditional treatments such as chemical insecticides for bug controlling and covering to avoid freezing have not been sufficient. In the presented paper, new ideas of using electromagnetic treatment for anti-freezing operation, pre-harvest Sunne pest control, and Orchid flower control are introduced.

Assembly of Low Phase noise Sub-Millimeter Wave Local Oscillator in Ku Band Frequency

A design and fabrication of a dual-band synthesizer device is presented in this paper. The noise analysis in synthesizer loop block component is modeled individually. The Design methodology is elaborated along with the test results. The initial frequency synthesizer in 1.8-2.4GHz frequency range (L and S-band) is designed and it is multiplied by 8. Microstrip bandpass filters (LFCN) are used to filter out the spurious frequency contents; the final output frequency is 14-20GHz (Ku-band). Phase noise investigation, design steps, filter assembling of 14-20GHz synthesizer is presented in this paper.

Cornell researchers have developed a new method of generating terahertz signals on an inexpensive silicon chip, offering possible applications in medical imaging, security scanning and wireless data transfer.

 

Terahertz radiation, the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum between microwaves and infrared light, penetrates cloth and leather and just a few millimeters into the skin, but without the potentially damaging effects of X-rays. Terahertz scanning can identify skin cancers too small to see with the naked eye. Many of the complex organic chemicals used in explosives absorb terahertz radiation at particular frequencies, creating a "signature" that detectors can read. And because higher frequencies can carry more bandwidth, terahertz signals could make a sort of super-Bluetooth that could transfer an entire high-definition movie wirelessly in a few seconds.
