Following Macaulay Culkin hoax, research examines media gTLD registration patterns - Blog - World Trademark Review | TLD | Scoop.it
Budgets are limited and companies have to consider carefully how extensive any defensive registration programme can feasibly be. It seems that media outlets have taken the right initial approach by focusing on industry-specific terms but – in a lesson for all industries – this may not be enough in the expanded online space.
Sieglinde Gooding's insight:

"...Media organizations are the worst affected by domain squatters. Therefore it would not be a surprise to see further hoaxes follow the Macaulay Culkin incident which, while it may seem humorous (even Culkin himself joked about it on social media), for the MSNBC brand offers few positives when it means the reputed brand is associated with a false story.  "

Amazon Won the dot-book Top-level Internet Domain: Should Publishers Care?

Amazon Won the dot-book Top-level Internet Domain: Should Publishers Care? | TLD | Scoop.it
Domains are very much like brands and the value of a brand–whatever that brand is–is a function of the work put into nurturing and supporting it. Simply by defining a brand, a person, organization or company isn’t assured it will become a household name, or even one recognized within a tight niche. Developing that niche requires diligence, effort, resources, timing, and even a bit of luck, as with any business activity.
Sieglinde Gooding's insight:

Would you mind if amazon had a page for every book it sold - "so that every title would have a singular “home page” in the dot-book domain"? I don't know if I would mind or not - as an author, if I had my own home page, and the amazon .book page helped sell my book, I may be ok with that?

What Is Net Neutrality? (Infographic)

What Is Net Neutrality? (Infographic) | TLD | Scoop.it
Many people are asking "what is net neutrality?" after President Obama mentioned it. This infographic explains what net neutrality is all about.

Via Prof. Hankell
Sieglinde Gooding's insight:

Ok, Net Neutrality, why is it a big deal - This is the perfect example, IMHO. "Imagine if the phone company could mess with your calls every time you tried to order pizza from Domino's, because Pizza Hut is paying them to route their calls first." In January '14, a major court decision stripped the FCC of its power to enforce network neutrality protections under the regulatory framework it was using. This decision provides an opening for the telecom companies to begin exploiting technologies by monitoring and controlling data sent via their networks.

If you don't think this could be an issue - it already has been - see this link https://www.aclu.org/net-neutrality#abuses1

And you've heard of it happening in other countries as well - often the Government censoring it's own constituents.

Sieglinde Gooding's insight:

New TLDs are an incredible opportunity for a brand. It effectively puts your brand name on every listing of your website, e.g. www.newstuff.yourbrand, and gives your clients (or in the case of non profits, possible donors) the guarantee they are on an authentic website.
