And what is service learning? If you are compelled, is that service? And what is it you learn in the process? To give of your heart and soul? Or, more likely, to resist, to sabotage, to give, at best, perfunctory performance.

Service learning helps elementary students see ‘big picture’ | tikkun olam | Scoop.it
A new way of teaching that initially started at universities and caught on with high schools is now trickling down to elementary schools, too.

 

Plenty of schools collect cans for food pantries.

 

Others encourage students to volunteer in the community at charities, senior centers or shelters.

 

But some take their goodwill a step further, connecting volunteerism and the classroom under an umbrella called “service learning.”

Students in our elementary school recently helped a local non-profit organization, Praying for Paws, that helps dogs find good homes. The students organized a donation drive, made homemade dog treats, and created advertisements for dogs that were available for adoption on social media. Way to go Eagles!

Bringing in various guest speakers from local non-profits is a great way to spark student interest in a community need. Young students don't often know the needs of their community until they are brought to their attention.
