An Army of Deer Ticks Carrying Lyme Disease Is Advancing and Here’s Why It Will Only Get Worse – | Tick Borne Diseases in Canada (including Lyme, Bartonella, Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis, etc.) | Scoop.it
This story was originally published by the Center for Public Integrity. It appears here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration. Maine’s invasion came early this year. In recent hotbeds of tick activity—from Scarborough to Belfast and Brewer—people say they spotted the eight-legged arachnid before spring. They noticed the ticks—which look like moving poppy seeds—encroaching on roads, beaches, playgrounds, […]

South Shore pharmacists can administer antibiotic for Lyme disease

South Shore pharmacists can administer antibiotic for Lyme disease | Tick Borne Diseases in Canada (including Lyme, Bartonella, Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis, etc.) | Scoop.it
People who have been bitten by a tick in a region with high rates of Lyme disease can now obtain antibiotics to prevent the disease, the Montérégie public health authority has announced.
Donna MacPherson Lugar's insight:
Too many questions in relation to this. What will the treatment be? Why 24 hours if it is known that there are times that Lyme can be transmitted more quickly? Why just 3 areas as ticks can be spread by birds and animals? What about people that didn’t see a tick but get obvious symptoms like a bull’s eye rash (which is fairly rare but indicative of Lyme)?

Canadian Research Study Looking for Participants

Interested in participating in a patient-centred Lyme disease research study being conducted by The University of Guelph? Read below for details...

The University of Guelph is currently recruiting participants for a study jointly offered by researchers in the Department of Population Medicine, and the G. Magnotta Lyme Disease Research Lab. The study (REB # 18-05-008) will examine the interactions that patients and families have with healthcare providers in the process of diagnosing and / or managing Lyme disease in Canada. The concept of ‘client-centred care’ describes the partnership between the patient and his/her healthcare providers, continuity and consistency of care, respect, and knowledge exchange.

This study will use questionnaires to evaluate the ‘client-centred care’ that patients received, as well as the symptoms and functional impairment they experienced. The goal is to identify areas for improvement in the delivery of health care in Canada.

The study is open to anyone in Canada who is 19 years of age or older, fluent in English, capable of providing consent, and has / had Lyme disease (diagnosed in Canada or internationally).

For more information, or to enrol in the study, please email gmlstudy@uoguelph.ca

SUDBURY DISTRICT—With the warm weather upon us and people enjoying the outdoors, Public Health Sudbury and Districts is reminding you to protect yourself and your family against tick bites and to learn what to do if you are bitten.
Donna MacPherson Lugar's insight:
I wish journalists would include the fact that you should never squeeze the body when speaking about removal and I also wish that they would stop making it sound like everyone get’s the bull’s eye rash. That type of rash is fairly rare. Other types are more common and many do not get, or see, a rash at all.

Diagnosing Lyme disease can be difficult because symptoms vary from one person to another.

I’m confused. For one question it says that there can be false negatives, even in late stage. For another question it says if the test comes back negative look for another diagnosis. So which is it?

Pharmacists now able to administer antibiotics for Lyme Disease | CTV Montreal News

Pharmacists in Monteregie can now administer antibiotics to people at risk for Lyme Disease.

Donna MacPherson Lugar's insight:
Unfortunately, most of the people I speak to never saw the tick and/or were not sure how long it was attached. As long as the treatment isn’t just a prophylactic dose, it will help a few, as long as nothing else was transmitted along with Lyme that requires a different treatment, such as Babesiosis.
