How People Use the Internet [INFOGRAPHIC]

How People Use the Internet [INFOGRAPHIC] | TIC | Scoop.it
Today, around the world more people have mobile phone subscriptions than have access to electricity and safe drinkable water. Today, almost a third of the world's population uses the internet (a 528.1% growth since 2000!

So what are we doing with all the time we spend online, and how do we know all that time is being spent in useful ways?

For many of us, the internet is among the first things we experience after we wake; in fact, 75% of users are online before 9 a.m. Over 75% of people in the US own a laptop, 53% a smart phone, and 31% a tablet. Email is the most common action performed by people on their laptops, while search is the top action for mobile phone and tablet users. 72% of people like to play games on their tablets while 70% use their mobile phones for social media. Where do we use these devices? 72% of people use their mobile phones while traveling, and 64% use them in restaurants and coffee shops. As for tablets, 88% of people use their devices in the living room, 79% in the bedroom.

The Trouble with Testing | DMLcentral

The Trouble with Testing | DMLcentral | TIC | Scoop.it

Learning research consistently shows that an emphasis on test scores does not necessarily lead to gains in academic performance. Perhaps learning, with its long-term gains and diffuse experiences does not lend itself well to an economic model. Instead of focusing on test scores at the elementary and secondary levels, why not take a longer-term view? Why public education? What are our true goals for teaching and learning? When pressed, most politicians will state that the long-term goals of education are to develop a citizenry that maximizes contributions to society and economy; yet, our standard test measures typically seem unrelated to the higher-order qualities that lead to such engaged citizens.

This article makes some good and concise points against standardized testing, but it doesn't really say anything we don't think already.  What we really need now are new evaluation and assessment tools based on updated goals for education.

A Wonderful Wheel featuring iPad Apps for Autistic Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | TIC | Scoop.it

"I must admit that apps for autistic learners are really scarce and hard to find. A few months ago I posted here a list some powerful apps for autism and today while I was looking for new apps that might have been created since the publication of that list I came across this wonderful wheel.

I know that the first thing that comes to mind when you see this wheel is the popular pedagogy Wheel created by Allan Carrington in which he provided suggestions for 62 apps based on Bloom's Taxonomy. The present wheel is developed by Mark Coppin in which he featured a wide variety of apps for autistic students."

For students who struggle with output, the option now exists to record ideas directly "onto a page." Similarly, teachers can leave audio feedback for students who benefit from hearing input multiple times. With the built-in camera, students can quickly snap pictures of class notes on a board, or record a quick video of teacher instruction. Leveraging just these few features has the potential to personalize learning and differentiate instruction where it might otherwise be impossible.
