The Flame of Truth made its way through the cities of Vienna, Linz and Salzburg from the 23rd to 25th October. In Vienna, Members of Austrian Parliament, local celebrities and human rights organisations joined Tibetans and their supporters to welcome the Flame of Truth in Austria. 58 placards with the photos and silhouettes of the self-immolators were displayed. The events, organised by the Tibetan Community in Austria with support from Save Tibet, the largest Tibet Support group in Austria, were covered in the local media as well as on national television.

A remarkable new set of images from Labrang today depict the self-immolation of Dorje Rinchen and its aftermath, showing the Tibetan farmer running down the street ablaze, and a buildup of troops in confrontation with local people trying to protect Dorje Rinchen.

The self-immolation of Dorje Rinchen has been confirmed by the Chinese state media today (October 23) and is the second self-immolation at Labrang in eastern Tibet in two days.

For short term, the power of gun is much stronger, but in the long run, the power of truth is more stronger than power of gun. That is my fundamental belief. I am not admiring the United States’ military power, including nuclear weapons. I really admire the United States’ moral principle, democracy, freedom and liberty. I admire these things, which are the source of the American power and not weapon.

China’s suspicions about India’s intentions with regard to Tibet in the 1950s, unfounded or otherwise, were not Beijing’s only major consideration in the lead-up to 1962. Declassified internal Chinese documents detail how the Forward Policy, by the summer of 1962, began to be seen in Beijing as an attempt by Nehru to unilaterally grab territory that had to be firmly stopped.
