Kent provided the backdrop for a new 10-part thriller series due to air on satellite channel Sky Atlantic next week.

The Tunnel, which is produced by the makers “Hustle”, “Life on Mars” and “Broadchurch”, was shot at a variety of east Kent locations.

The production, which stars Stephen Dillane and Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones) and Clémence Poésy (Harry Potter), was based at Discovery Park in Sandwich and filmed for 118 days in east Kent between February and August this year.

The crew, who spent a 91 days in the county for pre- and post- production, spent an estimated £2.5 million on local staff, accommodation, locations, parking, catering and other facilities, giving a great boost to the local economy.

The Tunnel was filmed across five Kent districts including Canterbury, Dover, Thanet, Shepway and Swale and a number prominent Kent locations will feature in the show including the Channel Tunnel, the Turner Contemporary and Folkestone Harbour.

Executive Producer on The Tunnel Manda Levin, said: “In creating ‘The Tunnel’ we were very aware the geography of the show was an integral part of it. It would have been unthinkable to try and make the piece anywhere other than Kent and Calais, and we were incredibly lucky to receive such a warm welcome from both regions.

“Our location manager, Mary Barltrop, led the charge initially and we were all immediately impressed by the level of enthusiasm and engagement from everyone we approached to facilitate the shoot, which was on a scale that British television is rarely lucky enough to achieve.

“Filming across this part of the Kent coast introduced us to an incredible range of locations, many of which we were able to design story around; the more we saw, the more we could use to inspire our incredible team of writers.”

The show is described as a tense thriller set against the backdrop of Europe in crisis. The synopsis says that “after a prominent French politician is found dead on the border between the UK and France, detectives from the respective countries are sent to investigate.

“However, French and British police make a shocking discovery at the crime scene, forcing them into an uneasy partnership.”

Filming arrangements in public locations like Folkestone, Margate and Dover’s town centres were co-ordinated by the Kent Film Office using the KCC funded group’s legal powers to close roads for filming and traffic management.
