Pollution Hackathon a Great Success

Pollution Hackathon a Great Success | Thoughts from +ADD Strategy | Scoop.it
Wolf Group receive their cheque from NWL for winning the PUMPED environmental pollution hackathon
paul sutherland 's insight:
I'm so enjoying our problem solving work @ADD_strategy at the moment.

Last week we ran a Hackathon to see whether it's possible to predict sewage pollution incidents. +ADD delivered the initiative as part of a broader project for Northumbrian Water and the event was hosted at the Cloud Innovation Centre at Newcastle University.

As well as being unpleasant, these can obviously harm people, the environment and damage businesses.

Northumbrian Water have an excellent reputation and seek to be the leading light in minimising pollution. For any water utility a major incident can have a significant financial impact with millions spent in clean-up, enforcement costs every year not to mention potential damage to reputation.

However the challenge is these incidents occur for a very wide range of reasons and are influenced by 100's of factors, not least the growing use and flushing of face / baby wipes and other sanitary products; and the pouring of oils/ fats down the sink.

Factoid : The industry refer to wipe blockages as 'sheep in the pipes' as they roll, degrade and mass, growing to a huge size.  Oils and fats form 'fatbergs' which can grow to over time in the sewers...yuck!

It's very hard to see patterns of any significance and near impossible to predict occurrences....so we gave analytical agencies 1000's of files with terabytes of data from incidents, site operations, maintenance, network management, environmental, weather and social demographic data.

Participants came from Cambridge University and specialist agencies from across the UK including PAM Analytics, Lost Artifact, Hippo Digital, Enigma Analytics, and Wolf Group as well as some independents.

The results were astounding and the hack was a great success.

We are now progressing 2 digital innovation projects as a result. The first uses correlated sensor 'tremors' to specially predict drain blockages by type, and another more broadly using metadata, fuzzy logic and an Artificial intelligence engine to forewarn of upcoming risks. (Well done to the winners Wolf Consulting and Li Yanger).

+ADD Strategy is actively looking for challenges to support.  As a fusion agency we use design thinking and innovation, insight and strategic rationale to solve complex problems, and to create / commercialise new value propositions.

Our open innovation processes involve a range of agencies and can enable funding even for large organisations.  We are currently also helping to design subsea robots, healthcare services and new hi-tech consumer furniture products.

If you think you can help or have a challenge to discuss ... email us :) paul@addstrategy.co.uk

P.S. ....don't put wipes down the loo!!!

Business gamification in the North East - A new 40k Competition

Business gamification in the North East - A new 40k Competition | Thoughts from +ADD Strategy | Scoop.it

An interesting initiative is open exclusively to those involved in NE game development including college and university students !!!

paul sutherland 's insight:

A competition is being launched by Northumbrian Water to design a corporate game to recognise ‘customer delighters’, as well as encourage and celebrate enterprising behaviour in their 3000 strong workforce.

The initiative is open exclusively to the NE game development community including regional college and university students.

Creating a competition of two halves has enabled Northumbrian Water to invite a broader range of participants and support local education community in the part of the creative and digital skills economy.

Students can not only submit ideas and concepts in phase 1 to win awards but also have the opportunity to meet and possibly engage with game development houses bidding for the build contract in phase 2!

Its a great opportunity and demonstrates more fresh thinking from Northumbrian Water who themselves are increasingly investing in diverse digital skills from cyber security to data expression and visualisation.

The launch event is on the 9th from 3-5 at VRTGO in Gateshead and free to attend.  Places are limited and going fast – book your place here

UK water tech sector must act fast to win £8.8bn share of global market by 2030 | Thoughts from +ADD Strategy | Scoop.it

paul sutherland 's insight:

there are at least six recognised water innovation hubs worldwide but the UK is not among them. Overall, the UK is undeniably a ‘bit player’ in the worldwide water technology sector. In 2013, global water and wastewater technology capital spending totalled an estimated £51.2 billion, reinforcing just how modest the performance of ‘UK plc’ currently is.

Why online communities are undervalued – and often fail

Why online communities are undervalued – and often fail | Thoughts from +ADD Strategy | Scoop.it
Online communities are not given the attention they deserve by businesses. Here is why they should and why online communities often fail.
paul sutherland 's insight:

An interesting insight.  I often feel those who sell online community concepts sell just that...empty shell services with too little support to effectively build, nourish and maintain a viable and useful scale of engagement.  Those who sell these platforms need to step up to the mark!

You Need to commit to Progressive Innovation Strategy

You Need to commit to Progressive Innovation Strategy | Thoughts from +ADD Strategy | Scoop.it
It’s the only way to make sound trade-off decisions and choose the right practices.
paul sutherland 's insight:

An excellent article which highlights the challanges facing those developing and implementing innovation strategy in real world business environments.  Despite good intentions, many companies seeking to invest in innovation fail to maintain a clear long term view that effectively provides a mandate for progressive innovation delivery.

The 2014 BIS SME survey evidences a actual decline in the proportion of SME's innovating new products and services (from 43 to 38%).    Further only a third considered they had innovation processes in place.

Under commercial pressure, many continue to make resource allocation decisions based on short term plans, favouring eclectic propositions and current percieved needs.

Bottom line is while short termism provides quick results it focusses on existing movements and current opportunity. Only after senior management agree explicit targets for different types of innovation (near to, adjecent and disruptive), and allocate a specific percentage of resources to longer term more radical projects ,will real progress be made in developing new offerings that support long-term differentiation and sustainable competitive advantage.

Needless to say appetite for longer term varies by sector, size of business, organisational risk avoidance culture, and leadership.*

The future of Higher Education - Speakers at Conference say ...a storm is coming!Perhaps it was the scale of audience, mix of speakers or simply the timing, but the 'Future of Higher education conference' yesterday at Salford University was certainly enlightening and gave air to some radical thinking.Several sector leaders including representatives from NCUB, AOC and JISC, universities and colleges spoke out about the need for acceleration in value creation, growth in commercial provision, income diversification, as well as the need to focus on better integration of p

A new report on comparative LEP 'SME digital skills strategies'...Just in case you missed it!

A new report on comparative LEP 'SME digital skills strategies'...Just in case you missed it! | Thoughts from +ADD Strategy | Scoop.it

This LEP survey report offers great insight into different approaches to raising basic digital skills levels and comparative views on the challanges faced.

You can find the link here:  https://www.digitalskills.com/whats-on

No great shocks on the needs of small businesses being very diverse; from using social media to promote their business and connect with new customers to taking payments and protecting themselves from fraud and storing digital information on suppliers and customers.

Regards barriers to progress, there is as you would expect reflection on the lack of resources and funds available to tackle the problem....but what is perhaps more surprising is the repeated reference to lack of understanding of SME's, how to engage and communicate with them.

paul sutherland 's insight:

Surely this is an open innovation question in the making - Given the extensive experience of economic development teams, the richness of the SME support ecosystem, and range of existing and diverse dedicated digital enterprise and related community initiaitives - we don't need brilliant enigmatic solutions - we just need people to come together effectively to create local solutions.

There is an event in London on the 26th.  Unfortunately you can only attend if you are from a LEP which is a shame as I am sure there are plenty of potential contributors...I wonder who is attending from the North East and Tees Valley?  Certainly Interested to hear the outcome.
