I*EARN 25 Years - Arte-Non-Vi

I*EARN 25 Years - Arte-Non-Vi | iEARN in Action | Scoop.it

Arte – non – vi : By skill, not – force. This is how lasting, peaceful change is made.

At the 25th Anniversary of the ground-breaking International Education and Resource Network [ I*EARN], I wanted to send a warm and heart-felt congratulations to all involved at the 20th International Conference in iEARN-Qatar/ROTA (Reach Out To Asia) in Doha, Qatar.

Although I have not been teaching for almost 20 years, I wanted to pass on my congratulations and best wishes to all those involved in Qatar this year.

I have little to share of the wonderful work that students completed in the early years, because my family lost all our belongings [and archives] in what was called the “Black Saturday Bush-fires” in 2009, here in Victoria, Australia.

However, with the assistance and kind permission of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation [ABC] I have been able to share a mini-documentary “Internet Kids” about I*EARN Australia, and the Broadford students. This was broadcast nationally in 1995. I hope you enjoy this as a small snapshot of the history and early stages of I*EARN. I also have some historical links at the bottom of the page.

iEARN-USA's insight:

Thank you so much for sharing, Bill!

Love the mini-documentary. Very kind of ABC to provide it to you to share.

Hello everyone,

I have arrived from Belarus to Nyirrpi. They have given me a name. The name is Kaki which means brother in the Warlpiri language. They speak Warlpiri here. The kids are going to take photos of me.

It was a long, long trip from Belarus to Nyirrpi.

All the kids want to know if Yayi has arrived.

Love from Kaki

Celebrating 25 Years of iEARN: "Solar Cooking Project, Miami Country Day School, Florida, April 20, 2012"

Celebrating 25 Years of iEARN: "Solar Cooking Project, Miami Country Day School, Florida, April 20, 2012" | iEARN in Action | Scoop.it

October 2012: Students, parents, faculty, staff and friends gathered at Miami Country Day Schoollocated in Miami, Florida, USA on Friday, April 20, 2012 and set the Guinness Book of World Records™ for “The Most Cookies Baked in One Hour Using Solar Ovens”. Trays of unbaked cookies were placed in 40 smaller solar ovens, as well as, two Villagersolar ovens. After the cookies were baked and 1225 counted....a World Record was set! The event raised over $18,000 USD, which was used to send the 40 solar ovens and a Villager oven to Haiti.

iEARN-USA's insight:

Love to see all iEARN solar cooking school photos on HIstoryPin. Solar cookers aren't usually thought of as educational technology, but they are.

Global Youth Service Day Doesn’t End Here

Global Youth Service Day Doesn’t End Here | iEARN in Action | Scoop.it

This April 26-28, iEARN is proud once again to be a Global Youth Service Day partner and help celebrate young people making a positive contribution to the health and welfare of the planet and its people. Similar to how Every Day is Earth Day for our network, every day is also a day for youth to serve their local and global communities. For 25 years iEARN has asked all project participants to address the question, “How will this project improve the quality of life on the planet?”
iEARN-USA's insight:

As iEARN celebrates its 25th Anniversary, we’re looking back with pride at the thousands of youth service activities our participants have performed around the world.  We’re also looking forward with anticipation to thousands more service projects during the next 25 years. As Hassan says, this doesn’t end here.

A Journey of Many Firsts

A Journey of Many Firsts | iEARN in Action | Scoop.it

After attending the iEARN International Conference and Youth Summit in Cape Town, South Africa in 2001, Jordan from Chattanooga, Tennessee wrote the following letter to us:

A Journey of Many Firsts

"Last summer was a Journey of Many Firsts thanks to receiving the Debra Kurshan iEARN Scholarship. After winning half a scholarship to attend the IEARN Youth Summit Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, my life changed forever. It changed my life in a way that I never dreamed possible before. It's hard to say, but it is like I have moved to a higher level in my life. I've worked so hard to accomplish so many goals in my life that this was a reward for all my efforts.

I never realized that winning this scholarship would be so much fun and give me the opportunity to experience so many "firsts". Some of the first experiences for me are the following:

-first plane ride...
-first time I knew there was cold weather in Africa
-first time seeing wild animals including the Cheetah , Penguins, and seals
first time seeing a modern mall in Africa, I always thought people lived in huts
-first time seeing a Township and the poverty that went along with living under those conditions
-first time seeing two oceans meet and mountains covered with clouds
-first time meeting and talking with a boy who was a "Child Soldier"
-first time meeting and sharing time with kids from 23 different countries ...
-first boat ride and trip to Robyn Island the prison where Nelson Mandela stayed..
-first time working with a group of kids from around the world on an Environmental Project
-first time attending a Global Conference with teachers and students >from 70 different countries and making a presentation at the closing ceremony
-first time raising funds to cover expenses for a trip
-first time getting a passport

When school started I encouraged my classmates to get involved with the IEARN Learning Circles Computer Chronicles project. We communicated with other kids from Belarus, Kuwait, Netherlands, New Jersey, Miami, and Botswana. These projects connect us to the world by the Internet...

I think this trip made me a better person and I am able to connect with people better from a variety of different cultures. I realize that I am one person but I can make an important difference in the lives of others."

We hope you will consider joining us in Doha, Qatar this July for our 20th annual conference and 17th annual youth summit. Perhaps it can be a journey of many firsts for you.
