RDA (Resource Description & Access)

RDA (Resource Description and Access) is a new standard for describing library resources, designed to replace AACR2.

Library staff, including public services, systems personnel, and catalogers, may have heard mention of RDA but not know much about it or how it will change their daily work.

This presentation answers many questions. What is RDA?  How is your library approaching RDA? Is your library planning to implement RDA? If yes, what is the plan? If not, how will your library handle RDA records? Do you think RDA will benefit your library and its patrons?

"We'll give a very little bit of history and theoretical background. What is this going to mean for catalogers, ILS managers, and users in the near term? What are the future implications, or, why are we doing this? What are the juicy bits of controversy in cataloger-land? And finally, Do we HAVE to? We'll talk for a while, have some activities that get you thinking, and find out your thoughts on RDA."

Presented at "Captains & Crew Collaborating," the 8th annual paraprofessional conference at J.Y. Joyner Library, East Carolina University.

I actually just wrote a proposal at my library to create a Mobile Makerspace at my library. Why mobile? We are a smaller branch with limited space, so I can't create a makerspace in the open parts of my library.

Library of Congress Announces Its Long-Range RDA Training Plan

Library of Congress Announces Its Long-Range RDA Training Plan...

The Library of Congress (LC) has announced that they would move forward with full implementation of RDA: Resource Description and Access on March 31, 2013. LC cited the significant progress that has been made toward addressing the recommendations of the U.S. RDA Test Coordinating Committee report of June 2011, and the need for sufficient lead time to prepare staff for the switch to RDA cataloging as reasons for the timing of this decision. The U.S. National Agricultural Library and the National Library of Medicine, as well as the British Library, Library & Archives Canada, Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, and National Library of Australia, will also target Day One of their implementation of RDA in the first quarter of 2013.

LC is now sharing its plan broadly to alert various constituencies. Download the Library of Congress Long-Range RDA Training Plan here: http://www.loc.gov/aba/rda/pdf/RDA_Long-Range_Training_Plan.pdf
