Taylor Meabon's insight:

Carpentry is interesting in the sense that it gives you most of the tools you need to be able to be a self functioning, self employed handyman who knows a bit about everything. If I ever took the time to become an architect, I'd work with a carpenter and learn from and with them to one day build my own house. I'd do it so I'd have to have as little help from others as possible.

Firefighters : Occupational Outlook Handbook: : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Firefighters : Occupational Outlook Handbook: : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics | things and stuff | Scoop.it
Firefighters control fires and respond to other emergencies, including medical emergencies.
Taylor Meabon's insight:

I've always had the highest level of respect for firefighters. The work they do is inspiring to say the least.
Reading this gave me more insight on what the day to day non emergency work is like for them. I knew they often worked long shifts, but 24-48 on call shifts where they sleep/eat at the fire station seems crazy.
And there' is a shift specifically for forest fire fighting called 10/14.
10 hours working/fighting the fire, 14 hours off.
10 hours doesnt sound like that much, but 10 hours in protective gear, wearing a respirator and carrying all their gear would be endlessly exhausting.
Dont know if I could do it, which makes me feel that much more appreciative for those that can/do.

Graphic Designers : Occupational Outlook Handbook: : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics | things and stuff | Scoop.it
Graphic designers create visual concepts, by hand or using computer software, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers. They develop the overall layout and production design for advertisements, brochures, magazines, and corporate reports.
Taylor Meabon's insight:

The more I look into Graphic design the less interested I am in other fields of work. I can't believe it took me this long to find the perfect occupation.
Finally I can  continue my passion for art without sacrificing an income.

social and human service assistants:
The video describes workers in this field as the connection between the people, and services those people might benefit from.
Seems like an interesting job. However doesnt seem like the end all be all of a job. I feel like [to a lesser extent] teachers or school counselors can do this somewhat efficiently. However I only have a small insight into how broad their connections and resources are.

Drywall Installer:
In my last job, a huge portion of my job was to destroy, cut, and tear out drywall or portions of it. I know what the material is like and I know that it's not to hard to work with. The process is simple enough and even the video explains that the apprenticeship program lasts only a few weeks.
The job pays well enough, Who knows, if nothing else it could be a way to pay the bills easily enough.

Taylor Meabon's insight:

Fine Artist:
I have always been very artistic. Though I wasn't the best painter or drawer - I always had a passion for art. It wasnt until my first year of highschool that I would discover pottery/ceramics. Which eventually led to hours of work outside of class time working on my projects, and later turned into awards from multiple art shows and festivals; And by the end of my senior year my love for pottery/ceramics earned me the title of "most artistic" in the eyes of my high school peers.
The prospect of art as a stable or regular source of income has never been appealing in the sense that; If I cant work at my own pace, on the projects I want to work on, Then I cant enjoy it and I can't work in that sort of environment. You see, almost all the artists that use art as a source of stable income mass produce a few items to get by. If you ask me, that's not what art is about.

Taylor Meabon's insight:

Graphic Design:
Beginning to read up on this field more makes me realize this isn't as far fetched as I had once believed. Not only is this something I would love to do every day, but something I can do to challenge myself in hobby and at work.
Art has always been very important to me, but until now, I had never considered a career path involving it.

A High School Dropout's Midlife Hardships | things and stuff | Scoop.it
In ninth grade, Kenny Buchanan dropped out of school. Now, 26 years later, his life is driven by the search for a permanent job that can support his family.
Taylor Meabon's insight:

Wont let this be me in 30 years. School may not be easy for me. But I'll manage if it means that I can avoid a lifetime of job insecurity and self insecurity.
The more time passes, the harder it is to find work without education & experience. Life might go slowly for me, but I will press on.

WOIS - High School Educator

WOIS provides current information on occupations, educational programs and postsecondary schools in Washington State
Taylor Meabon's insight:

This interview gives a more personable explanation of the road to becoming an architect, and the duties performed by them.
For buildings to be able to stand the test of time, they need the perfect conditions. Which includes using experts in alot of different fields to make sure the structure is safe and sound, and that the climate and foundation is also safe and sound.
This interview gave me some insight into how long the process of becoming an architect is. 8 years is the average minimum. This certainly makes me thinking twice about committing to this career.

Architects : Occupational Outlook Handbook: : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics | things and stuff | Scoop.it
Architects plan and design houses, office buildings, and other structures.
Taylor Meabon's insight:

This website brings up some really good points. Although it mentions many of the same things WOIS does, it also touches on some of the more subtle aspects of architecture. The fact that despite its high requirement for education, there are still fewer jobs than applicants. Making the field very, very competitive. You also have to be willing to take control and direct the projects just like a movie director takes control of the film.

High School Teachers : Occupational Outlook Handbook: : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

High School Teachers : Occupational Outlook Handbook: : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics | things and stuff | Scoop.it
High school teachers help prepare students for life after graduation. They teach academic lessons and various skills that students will need to attend college and to enter the job market.
Taylor Meabon's insight:

This helps explain High School Educators responsibilities in a very distinct and understandable way.
It draws a lot of attention to the fact that teachers spend signifigant portion of time outside of the classroom still working or preparing for upcoming classes/events.
The workload doesn't intimidate me. I welcome the challenge of teaching others sometimes difficult concepts and connecting with individuals regularly.
However having to reason with unreasonable parents sounds like cruel and unusual punishment.

Although this is a perfectly legitimate job opportunity/career opportunity I feel like I wouldnt devote enough time in this field to have as a job for the rest of my life. Maybe as a temporary job, but I would rather not have to get an education for a temporary placeholder job.

Architect: I love watching all the pieces of a puzzle come together - especially when they come out looking how I had imagined from the start. I love critically thinking - and having to make adjustments to the original design requires just that: Critical Thinking. However 5 years just to get a bachelors degree is quite a lot of time investment.

Craft Artist:
This form of art is more my "flavor".
Creating and mastering my own pieces of work to satisfy my creative flow would fulfill me day in and day out. However even the video [linked] says that it's likely a craft artist would have to have a [second] job to support this work.
Bringing me back to the idea that this is more of a hobby than a likely profession or source of income.

Taylor Meabon's insight:

Looking over the carpenters duties and knowledge requirements - this definitely looks like a viable job option if I cannot follow through with college education. If nothing else, its a set above blue collar work.
Learning and using the skills required seems like it would be fun and useful outside of a work environment one day.

WOIS - Architecture

WOIS provides current information on occupations, educational programs and postsecondary schools in Washington State
Taylor Meabon's insight:

Reading through the requied Skills and Abilities, Knowledge, Training, I have learned how often teachers work semi-independently. Occasionally working with supervisors when they decide to make decisions outside of their day-to-day schedules.
I learned that they have to have their Bachelors degree, internship experience, and complete a teachers training program.
I also found out how helpful having a double major is when it comes to your job outlook. As well as the willingness to  supervise extra-curricular activities and other events.
The wages seem fair and job outlook promising.
