Antifragililty and TOC by Uwe Tech

Antifragililty and TOC by Uwe Tech | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it
The concept of “antifragility” has been a hot topic in the business world since the release of Nassim Taleb’s latest book. A quick overview can be found in this blog post – based on a short video intro by Taleb himself. Dr. Alan Barnard picked up the topic at this year’s TOCICO conference in his presentation “What does not kill us makes us stronger… or not”1,with the aim of showing how the Theory of Constraints can help systems (i.e. organizations, supply system or even individuals) become “antifragile”.

WiseTech-TOCICO Workshop on TOC - full 5h video available to TOCICO members

WiseTech-TOCICO Workshop on TOC - full 5h video available to TOCICO members | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it
On Friday, November 2 in Chicago, IL, USA, members of TOCICO gathered to attend the WiseTech-TOCICO Capacity Workshop presented by James Powell, Chief Productivity Officer, WiseTech Global. This event is a good example of the new strategic direction TOCICO has embarked on this year – to put their members in touch with prospects. The great majority of attendees in the room were operating and finance related companies, hoping to learn how to use their office teams more productively.
Philip Marris's insight:

The full video is only available to TOCICO members. I recommend that people who are seriously interested in TOC become a member.

This is one of the best workshop videos on TOC in many years. It is long (5h45!) but even watching random extracts will be enlightening. I actually watched the whole workshop because it was so interesting (and I have +30 years of TOC experience).

Bring the Crowbar. Leverage Points: Places to Intervene in a System by Donella Meadows

Bring the Crowbar. Leverage Points: Places to Intervene in a System by Donella Meadows | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it

In this article, Meadows goes through her twelve “leverage points” in which you can affect change in your company or any complex system, from least to most effective.

“Magical leverage points are not easily accessible, even if we know where they are and which direction to push on them. There are no cheap tickets to mastery. You have to work hard at it, whether that means rigorously analyzing a system or rigorously casting off your own paradigms and throwing yourself into the humility of Not Knowing. In the end, it seems that mastery has less to do with pushing leverage points than it does with strategically, profoundly, madly letting go.”

We cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • All of Meadows’ 12 Leverage Points
  • Positive and negative feedback loops
  • The NRA and gun control
  • How individuals can change the system in small and big ways
  • Brexit and the Eurozone
  • The paradigms that shape our thinking

Hubstaff founder's key to success: Theory Of Constraints

Over the years, Dave has written extensively on the topic of growth and team management, so we knew we’d get a great answer. Here’s his best kept productivity secret: the Theory of Constraints. “My key is to focus on what matters and let the rest fall behind. At Hubstaff, we deliver on this approach by following the Theory of Constraints, ...

Find out damages caused by well entrenched assumptions of agile methodology including the use of standard sprints for software development. The practice of using standard sprints for planning, force lead sprint managers to arbitrarily “cut” deliverables or size out work which may not result in any feature which is usable at the end of the sprint.

The DevOps Story of transforming BAE Systems | Raj Folwer / DevOpsGroup | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it

Raj Fowler, Principal Consultant at DevOpsGroups, reflects on the things he learnt while leading the digital transformation journey at BAE Systems. [...] However, despite these great things, DevOps is not the goal. And Agile is not the goal. Yes, we optimised the delivery of IT products, but this isn’t the “whole system”. Goldratt says optimising anything other than the constraint is a waste. The goal of a business is to make money, and just making IT better does not lead to better business performance.

Cash-Starved Startups: Are Bottlenecks Strangling Your Cash Flow? | Schwally.me | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it

Let’s talk about bottlenecks. As you grow, not all parts of the business grow evenly. It’s important to look for places where your processes aren’t scaling as well or as fast as other areas. Where, for example, do you still have a manual process? [...] Book Recommendation. There’s a classic book that I haven’t heard people talking about recently, which is super helpful for clearing bottlenecks in the growth phase of building your company. It’s called The Goal: A Business Graphic Novel by Eli Goldratt. It’s an awesome business book not only for its lessons around bottlenecks and the theory of constraints, but because the book is written as a novel.

Throughput Accounting for Manufacturing Organizations, Part 4 by Bob Sproull

Throughput Accounting for Manufacturing Organizations, Part 4 by Bob Sproull | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it

... TA uses three basic measurements as follows:

  • Throughput (T): The rate at which the system generates money and uses the formula: T = Net Sales (NS) – Totally Variable Costs (TVC) or T=NS – TVC
  • Investment (I): Investment includes all of the money in the system including inventory of raw material, work-in-process, and finished goods valued as TVC.
  • Operating Expense (OE): OE is all of the money a system spends in generating “goal units,” and includes things like salaries and wages, insurance, and rent over a relevant time period.

From these three basic measurements we can then calculate Net Profit (NP) and Return on Investment (ROI) as follows:

  • Net Profit (NP) = Throughput (T) – Operating Expense (OE) or NP = T – OE
  • Return on Investment (ROI) = Net Profit (NP) / Investment ( I ) or NP/I

We can also calculate other measures such as Productivity as follows:

  • Productivity (P) = Throughput (T) / Operating Expense (OE) or P = T/OE ...

What’s the Difference Between a Manufacturing Bottleneck and a Constraint? | Synchrono

What’s the Difference Between a Manufacturing Bottleneck and a Constraint? | Synchrono | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it

Bottlenecks and constraints are two terms that are often used interchangeably in Demand-Driven Manufacturing as well as in discussions on Lean Manufacturing and flow. It’s easy to use one term when you actually mean the other. However, since these two limiters on throughput need to be addressed differently, it’s important to understand the distinction. What is a Manufacturing Bottleneck? A bottleneck represents a temporary overload on a resource. The cause of the overload can be wide-ranging: a malfunctioning machine, an absentee operator, missing tools, an unexpected materials shortage, newly hired personnel, etc. While a bottleneck can cause serious delays, these are all issues which can be “fixed.” What is a Manufacturing Constraint? A constraint is a long-term and persistent limiter to flow. ...
