18 year history of TOC at Hitachi - Post by Jack Vinson

18 year history of TOC at Hitachi - Post by Jack Vinson | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it
The first official day of the TOCICO conference started with a keynote from Kaoru (John) Watanabe talking about the long history of TOC implementations at Hitachi, "Enterprise wide TOC Implementation at $83B Conglomerate." They've implemented TOC in a variety of ways from the standard operations (DBR) approaches to using TOC thinking to design solutions (in IT) and in continuous improvement. And while they've had many great successes over that 18 years, they have only touched about 5-10% of the Hitachi business, and primarily in Japan. As one would imagine with this kind of presentation, Watanabe had a discussion of a lot of lessons learned.

An introduction to the dice game
Welcome to the dice game simulator. The aim of the dice game is to demonstrate what happens when you have a system of dependent steps (one activity cannot be started until the previous step is complete) and where each step experiences statistical fluctuations (performance varies day by day).

On this page there are two games: the standard game, which is the game played in chapter nine of Pride and Joy, and The Manager’s game where you have resources which can be moved between throws to try and improve flow.

The FOCCCUS formula by Clarke Ching - Recording and PDF of TOCPA Expert Webinar

The FOCCCUS formula by Clarke Ching - Recording and PDF of TOCPA Expert Webinar | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it

My name is Clarke Ching and I am a Goal-aholic. I’ve read the book many, many times in the last 20 years and, it is, hands down, my favourite book, ever. It changed my life.

There’s only one problem with it: normal, everyday people – people NOT like us converts – will never read it.

So, they miss out and the world is worse off. I’ve tried to fix this problem by writing a breathtakingly brief bottleneck book. In it I tell stories about finding and managing bottlenecks. In this session I’ll run through my astonishingly simple alternative to the 5 Focusing Steps called FOCCCUS. It’s a mnemonic that stands for Find, Optimise, Coordinate, Collaborate, Curate and Start Again (strategically). I’ll also describe five types of bottleneck, share a joke, and tell you how I teach DBR (by not teaching DBR).

I didn’t write this book for you, but my 74 year-old-mum and my 12-year-old daughter read (in about 90 minutes), enjoyed and understood. ...

This website is regarded by many people as one of the best in quality and quantity concerning the Theory Of Constraints. It is administered by Kelvyn Youngman
Philip Marris's curator insight, August 25, 2013 3:42 PM

To quote from his website: "I spent quite some time living in Japan working within a large corporation that was both a batch manufacturer and a significant supplier to Toyota.  Their batch production mode had always caused them to decline “offers” from Toyota to improve their process and timeliness (but not their products which were in every sense of the word “World Class”).  However, together, we were able through Theory of Constraints to produce very significant improvements within a very short period of time.  Results that were significant enough to be reported in the national business press and also national television.

Let me say that I have deep respect for the fundamental techniques of Japanese kaizen, and of Toyota in particular.  Let me also say that I am not ignorant of Lean nor of its predecessors; World Class Manufacturing, Just-in-time, and so forth.  But there is something that is wrong with Lean (and Six Sigma) and I want to try to explain this. ...."

Theory of Constraints' Replenishment Solution, Part 1 | Bob Sproull

Theory of Constraints' Replenishment Solution, Part 1 | Bob Sproull | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it

This is the first post in a new series on the Theory of Constraints’ part replenishment and distribution solution. In this series, I will explore the replenishment model used by many of today’s companies and begin looking at why many companies struggle to balance minimizing inventory with avoiding stock-outs. I will also discuss the TOC distribution and replenishment model and present why it is a superior system for avoiding large quantities of inventory, as well as stock-outs. I will conclude the series with the results that you can expect from this model.

Lars Axelsen posted a nice article combining these two ways of thinking, Change must address reservations! This image is from his article. The layers of resistance have many forms. It starts with the basics: Is there a problem? Then goes through What to Change? What to Change To? And How to Cause the Change?
