Eli Goldratt Interview by Clarke Ching, 2010 | ClarkeChing.com

Eli Goldratt Interview by Clarke Ching, 2010 | ClarkeChing.com | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it

|...] And that’s why the last sentence of the book is ‘Even the sky is not the limit’. And the reader understands that that’s correct.
CC: It is, too. Yes, I’m just looking at that page now.
EG: The idea is, my idea is to write six such books. As a matter of fact, those who know TOC know very well that what I’ve done here is nothing but taking one of the standard S&T trees and to turn it into a novel. Now, there are six S&T trees for the various segments of the industry. So this one is for retail. But there are five more, which my intention now is to find excellent writers and to write them one at a time. So the next book will be called, most probably, ‘Isn’t It Obvious 2?’ and then ‘Isn’t It Obvious 3?’ Each one covering a totally different section of the industry, but with the same ideas, which are every huge step, that really changes and really elevates the company to another level of performance is just the platform for another jump, for another jump which never ends.

Philip Marris's insight:

A classic source. 10 page text and podcast available. This is a repost.

[Stop multitasking] Finding flow is hard, but possible by David Hodes | Ensemble Consulting

[Stop multitasking] Finding flow is hard, but possible by David Hodes | Ensemble Consulting | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it

The opposite of all this multitasking is [...] ‘flow’. [...] In recent years, we’ve essentially trained ourselves to become addicted to the tiny packets of dopamine released when we feel our phone vibrate or hear an email or social media alert. [...] In short, while we may really want to engage deeply with a task, honing our mastery of complex problem-solving, we achieve that flow state all too fleetingly. What’s the solution?

There are really four core problems preventing us from working in flow:

  • knowing what to work on next
  • interruption by colleagues
  • technological distraction
  • self-sabotage ...

This website is regarded by many people as one of the best in quality and quantity concerning the Theory Of Constraints. It is administered by Kelvyn Youngman
Philip Marris's curator insight, August 25, 2013 8:42 PM

To quote from his website: "I spent quite some time living in Japan working within a large corporation that was both a batch manufacturer and a significant supplier to Toyota.  Their batch production mode had always caused them to decline “offers” from Toyota to improve their process and timeliness (but not their products which were in every sense of the word “World Class”).  However, together, we were able through Theory of Constraints to produce very significant improvements within a very short period of time.  Results that were significant enough to be reported in the national business press and also national television.

Let me say that I have deep respect for the fundamental techniques of Japanese kaizen, and of Toyota in particular.  Let me also say that I am not ignorant of Lean nor of its predecessors; World Class Manufacturing, Just-in-time, and so forth.  But there is something that is wrong with Lean (and Six Sigma) and I want to try to explain this. ...."

The Goal by Eliyahu M. Goldratt  | Nicole Schlinger Book Review

Two great things about this book - First, the Theory of Constraints is must-have organizational knowledge. While the story is about bottlenecks (and what to do about them) a manufacturing operation, the principles are just as applicable to knowledge work where information gets bottle-necked even more intransigently than a manufacturing assembly line. Second, business authors would get a lot more readership if they would turn their lessons into stories. ...

[...]

The Theory of Constraints inspired IT consultant David J Anderson while he was developing modern Kanban. The goal is the same – continuous improvement, increasing efficiency, improving throughput, decreasing cycle times and removing blockers or bottlenecks.

The Theory of Constraints integrates very well with the Kanban methodology. A Kanban board enables the project manager [...] Another powerful Kanban tool for identifying constraints is the cumulative flow diagram. This diagram visually shows how work in each process state progresses over time. By understanding the most common CFD patterns, the location of common constraints becomes much more clear. ...

"The Goal" - One of the 25 Most Influential Business Management Books according to Time Magazine

"The Goal" - One of the 25 Most Influential Business Management Books according to Time Magazine | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it
There's never a shortage of new books about how to be more effective in business. Most of them are forgettable, but here are 25 that changed the way we think about management
"Eliyahu Goldratt's The Goal is unusual among business management books for at least two reasons. First, Goldratt wasn't a titan of industry, a b-school professor, or even a consultant, but rather a physicist. Second, The Goal is a novel. Centered on a production manager named Alex Rogo who has three months to turn around a deficient, unprofitable manufacturing plant, The Goal explains the "Theory of Constraints," which among other points incorporates the idiom, "A chain is only as strong as its weakest link;" and focuses on bottlenecks, the great hindrances to productivity. Rogo uses the Socratic method to help fix his marriage, then applies it to his plant crew, coming up with steps to solve the plant's problems. The Goalhas been in print since 1984, and a revised third edition was released on the book's 20th anniversary. So does Rogo achieve his goal? You'll have to read it to find out." To see the full list of 25:http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/completelist/0,29569,2086680,00.html

The bottlenecks that create opportunity for printers - Print Business Magazine by Udi Arieli | PrintBusiness.co.uk

The bottlenecks that create opportunity for printers - Print Business Magazine by Udi Arieli | PrintBusiness.co.uk | Theory Of Constraints | Scoop.it

Udi Arieli has devised Total Global Optimisation as the theory that describes how every print company operates, and how every print company can improve.

Every business needs a theory. [...] Henry Ford’s production lines then Edward Deming’s Total Quality Management which has spurred Japanese concepts like Kaizan, Kanban and continual improvement. In recent years the Theory of Constraints, described in Eli Goldratt's book The Goal, has been popular in the printing industry. It emphasises the elimination of efficiency sapping bottlenecks which act as a constraint on production efficiency. [...] Arieli, who met Goldratt, and discussed business optimisation theories with him, prefers the Theory of Global Optimisation, which was specially developed for the printing industry to the more generic TOC.
