Lean Startup in the Enterprise Anti-Pattern: The Lean Waterfall by @TriKro | The lean startup | Scoop.it

The implementation of Agile (or lean thinking if you prefer) will continue in this vein until you arrive at a fully implemented Lean Waterfall where everyone thinks they are being lean and focusing on continual improvement, but busily blaming every other department for delays in deliverable handoffs that prevents their department from iterating effectively.

How to Start Customer Development and Investigate the Problem

How to Start Customer Development and Investigate the Problem | The lean startup | Scoop.it

To recap from the earlier post in the BVL series, the startup process usually goes:

1. Idea, usually a value proposition, a solution to a need.

2. Formulate your hypotheses.

3. Size the opportunity. Will this idea need/attract investments or is it a lifestyle business?

4. Validate your assumptions with customer development.

Nikolas Daras's insight:

A nice and brief summary of the startup process.

Your Business Model Is a System And Why You Should Care

Your Business Model Is a System And Why You Should Care | The lean startup | Scoop.it

Lean emerged out of the manufacturing world with a rallying cry for “waste reduction” in the production process. Lean Software drew parallels between hardware and software manufacturing processes and aimed to reduce waste also in the production process.

Then Lean Startup came along and pointed out that efficient production is NOT enough UNLESS it also delivers customer value and emphasized learning OVER production towards that end.

We all know metrics are important. They help report progress and guide our decision making. But as our capacity to track everything increases, and the tools to do so become easier and more prevalent, the question remains: what is a worthwhile metric to track?

Validated learning about customers

Validated learning about customers | The lean startup | Scoop.it

Would you rather have $30,000 or $1 million in revenues for your startup? Sounds like a no-brainer, but I’d like to try and convince you that it’s not. All things being equal, of course, you’d rather have more revenue rather than less. But all things are never equal. In an early-stage startup especially, revenue is not an important goal in and of itself.

good examples to live lean

Oliver Durrer's curator insight, October 22, 2014 2:22 PM

The notion of "MVP" or "Minimum Viable Product" is a key element of Eric Ries' book The Lean Startup. The idea is to test an MVP with early adopters to reach product-market fit as quickly as possible through real customer feedback and validation of underlying growth and value hypotheses. Avoiding to waste time and resources on developing a product that nobody wants. Still - very surprisingly to me - the number one reason for Startup failure, according to this source: http://sco.lt/8gFEh7

Why the Lean Start-Up Changes Everything - Harvard Business Review

Why the Lean Start-Up Changes Everything - Harvard Business Review | The lean startup | Scoop.it

But recently an important countervailing force has emerged, one that can make the process of starting a company less risky. It’s a methodology called the “lean start-up,” and it favors experimentation over elaborate planning, customer feedback over intuition, and iterative design over traditional “big design up front” development. Although the methodology is just a few years old, its concepts—such as “minimum viable product” and “pivoting”—have quickly taken root in the start-up world, and business schools have already begun adapting their curricula to teach them.

Lean goes mainstream

Product Development and Customer Insight Tools

Product Development and Customer Insight Tools | The lean startup | Scoop.it

I’ve been asked a lot about interesting tools that can help support founders and product development teams get their product off the ground.

These tools are generally free (at some level) but also designed to capture customer feedback and insights rapidly to support testing all levels and fidelities of minimal viable products and beyond.

This is not a exclusive list and I will aim to add to it from time to time but I thought I would share a starter kit initially and build upon it – incrementally.

The art of entrepreneurship and the science of Customer Development aren't not just getting out of the building and listening to prospective customers. They are understandingwho to listen to and why.
