This research is signgicant because of steep increases in the number of social drinkers who consume energy drinks along with alcohol.

80 subects  of equal gender attended 1 session where they were randomly assigned to receive 1 of 4 doses (0.91 ml/kg vodka, 1.82 ml/kg energy drink, 0.91 ml/kg vodka mixed with 1.82 ml/kg energy drink [AmED], or a placebo beverage). Investigators assessed alcohol-induced priming of the motivation to drink by self-report on the Desire for Drug questionnaire.

The priming dose of alcohol increased the subjective ratings of “desire” for more alcohol and investigators noted that this result is  consistent with previous research that small doses of alcohol can increase the motivation to drink. However, higher desire ratings over time were also observed with AmEDs compared with alcohol alone.

This article shows the studies of an experiment of how the mixing of alcohol with energy drinks, increases your desire for alcohol but in particularly teenagers. The results of the study showed that mixing alcohol with energy drinks does increase your desire for alcohol.

In class we discussed things such as standard drinks and learnt that a bottle of energy drink with alcohol has more than one standard drink in it, with probably more standard drinks then any other alcohol.

We also discussed that teenagers like energy drinks with alcohol as it just tastes like sugar which can be bad because they are not aware of how much alcohol they have drank because it just tastes like any other drink. This can be quite dangerous, and is probably why energy drinks with alcohol increases desire for alcohol for teenagers.
