Homelessness in Corvallis

Homelessness affects all of us. Although in Eastern Oregon we do not see this often because our infrastructures are not capable to helping these people. They simply cannot survive the harsh weather and the lack of liberal money. But if you ever head to the west side of Oregon, you see homelessness in abundance. I grew up in Salem and this issue was always at hand.

About 6 years ago I was living in Corvallis. There was a homeless man that was always in front of the Fred Meyers on Kings ave. He was a very nice man and we chatted many times. It started out as a few minutes and later it became hours. I learned that he had tragically lost his wife and went to the bottle for comfort. He told me that after she died nothing seemed to matter. He eventually lost everything else. But without her what was the point? I asked him if he would like to get sober and back on track. He always said yes but I saw hopelessness behind his eyes.
One day I had enough. I went to the bank and pulled out $200. I went to Fred Meyer and took him by the arm and told him it was time to do something. We went to a thrift store and got him a suit and tie. We also got him general day to day clothes. Then we went to the barber. He began to look “human” again. The couch was reserved for him and a week later he got a job at the local Grocery Outlet stocking shelves at night. A month later he moved into a “halfway house” kind of place. I gave him my address and phone number along with a few hundred more dollars so that he could have a cushion during his resurrection. He said he would pay me back but I didn’t care. I was watching the best social experiment ever done. I didn’t hear from him for about a year. Then I got a letter. He was in his own apartment now, still sober, and seeing a woman from his work. He explained that he still missed her ememsely but life goes on. I wrote back how proud of him I was.
About 2 years later I got another letter. I was to be his best man in his wedding to his coworker. I was blessed. Now, he works hard, has bought a house, and remains sober. He likes to keep his name to himself because that time in his life was now to remain in the past.
How could people be so selfish not to help a man in need? How could these “good Christians” allow it? The biggest problem here is that for about a year, I didn’t speak to the man. He could’ve died within that time. People need help now. Remember that.

A push to help U.S. veterans fight homelessness

A push to help U.S. veterans fight homelessness | The war on the home front-Homelessness in America | Scoop.it
Since last year the number of homeless in the U.S. has fallen, but tens of thousands are still on the streets, and more could soon join them as troops return home.

These folks fought for our freedom, and now live a sad and seemingly hopeless life on the streets.  They need help.
