Creating Games for Journalism

Creating Games for Journalism | The virtual revolution | Scoop.it

Games mock realities that, at their best, can make players feel an emotion more powerfully than any other medium. You are the on-screen actor, and you control the game's plot through your actions. Having control means you're responsible, within obvious bounds, for what happens in the game, so achievements, failures, consequences and the emotions those come with, belong to you.

It's good to see at least a mention of Twine for creating CYOA games -although not mentioning Inform 7 or Quest 5 for creating parser-based IF is a huge oversight IMHO. Professor Denniz Jerz has been using Interactive Fiction/Inform 7 to teach Journalsim for many years

"Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand.”

Ms. Corri's curator insight, August 18, 2013 1:57 PM

This seems like a great way to teach kids, but also to get them to teach their peers. We know that if you can successfully teach someone, then you truly understand the skill.

Preparing our students for Web 3.0 learning

How do we prepare out students for Web 3.0 learning? This slide show by Judy O'Connell provides us an opportunity to look back in time, from what we might refer to as Web 0 and the journey to where we are today and where we are heading. Many define Web 2.0 as the social web. Web 3.0 will be defined by data, and the ability to link data in new ways. Many excellent resources are embedded within this slide show, so find some time to pull up your chair and learn more about what the future may hold.

Study: Social Media Helps With Teenage Empathy, Awareness

Study: Social Media Helps With Teenage Empathy, Awareness | The virtual revolution | Scoop.it

According to the study, conducted online in January, more than half of teens (55 percent) say social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have made them more aware of the needs of others. This is a huge increase from 2011 when 4 in 10 (44 percent) said their use of social media made them more aware. The study also says 2 in 3 teens (68 percent) agree that the benefits of social media outweigh the risks.

Advent of Google means we must rethink our approach to education

Advent of Google means we must rethink our approach to education | The virtual revolution | Scoop.it

Teaching in an environment where the internet and discussion are allowed in exams would be different. The ability to find things out quickly and accurately would become the predominant skill. The ability to discriminate between alternatives, then put facts together to solve problems would be critical. AThat's a skill that future employers would admire immensely.

Wow!  Allowing internet access and discussion during exams???  As bizarre as it sounds, I think it's awesome!  Instead of teaching our kids to memorize everything, we could teach them to THINK!  A good thing indeed.

Jacqui Cooper's curator insight, June 18, 2013 11:14 AM

Well as employers in the UK (and I suspect elsewhere) are complaining about students leaving school without the right skills, the schools should be looking at this seriously.

Goodbye Essay, Hello Podcast | Dialogue

Goodbye Essay, Hello Podcast | Dialogue | The virtual revolution | Scoop.it

One of the greatest conflicts between new and old literacies is many educators’ continuing belief that students’ analytical skills are not properly developed through the use of new media. There is some justification for this: Many student-created new media works are simplistic mishmashes of audio and video clips with no thesis or rationale. New media is used more as a toy than as an educational tool. It is no wonder that many teachers, uncomfortable with new media to begin with, see it as harming student literacy.

I really like this quote: "However, today’s students find print to be a clumsy way to access information. Print is no longer the easiest way to convey information in an expanding world of readily accessible digital audio and video resources."
