Most welding done on aircraft is all done by hand and is extremely specialized due to how thin the metals are.
Trevor Lilja's comment, May 4, 2014 11:57 PM
The welders' GTAW skill is relatively high, especially for aircraft component welders. Every test weld either is X-rayed or metallographically tested to spot various possible defects such as crater cracking or underfill, so preventing heat distortion is critical.

The TIG process can be used to weld steel, stainless steel, chromoly, aluminum, nickel alloys, magnesium, copper, brass, and even gold. It can be used to weld every day items such as bike frames or doors. TIG is a very versatile process.
Trevor Lilja's comment, May 4, 2014 11:15 PM
TIG welding creates the cleanest weld beads due to its superior arc and its weld puddle control capabilities. With TIG you can adjust you temperature setting to where they are perfect for whatever you may be doing.
Trevor Lilja's comment, May 4, 2014 11:19 PM
TIG does not create any fumes or smoke, unless you have a contaminated base metal. It also does not have any slag which makes for easy clean up and makes it easier to see your weld puddle.

Tungsten is a very hard, slightly radioactive, and brittle metal. Its uses are limited compared to other metals. In TIG welding the tungsten is made into a non consumable electrode that is used to create the arc for TIG welding.
Trevor Lilja's comment, May 4, 2014 5:48 PM
Tungsten has very unique properties that allow it ti withstand extreme temperatures. It also conducts electricity very well, which is why it's so suitable for this welding process.
Trevor Lilja's comment, May 4, 2014 5:53 PM
Argon is the main gas used when doing TIG today. Argon is used due to the fact that it is an inert gas. An inert gas is used because it does not affect the properties of the weld and keeps unwanted gases off of the weld.

Tungsten has the second highest melting point out of all the elements. The element that takes first is carbon. tungsten is used for light bulb fillaments, jet turbines, and jewelry. Due to its high melting point and density, it is ideal for TIG welding.

When TIG welding you use 4 types of consumeables: collet, collet body, nozzle, and the back cap. All are made of materials that if not taken care of can wear out or break.
Trevor Lilja's comment, May 4, 2014 7:30 PM
There are a wide varieties of consumables available. When you choose your consumables select it them based on their quality and the process you'll be doing.

According to NASA,"

The 26th successful flight of Atlantis last October would not have been possible without Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) to restore integrity to a hydrogen fuel line component. This may be the most important and famous act in the history of welding maintenance repair and operation. Florida Senator Bill Nelson certainly thought so. He entered this welding achievement in the Congressional Record."

When NASA was examining different repair techniques, they came to the conclusion that TIG welding was the proceess that offered the most benefits and had the lowest risks.

A water cooled torch is nice because the torch will never overheat. You can weld for extended periods of time not having to worry about your torch overheating.Water cooled torches are great if you have a steady water source nearby or have a water cooler.

Different tungsten is used for different types of currents. Pure tungsten(green) is used for AC welding whereas thoriated tungsten is used for DCEN welding.

When you want to start TIG welding, you want to make sure you have the right equipment. One piece that is always helpful is called a TIG finger. It helps protect your finger from the heat of the metal as you stable your hand on the basemetal.
