My Scoop on The Three Gorges Dam

The Three Gorges Dam is a dam built along the Three Gorges Reservoir and it acts as a hydroelectric generator for the people of China within the Yangtze region. It is the world's largest hydroelectric power source and is also in an area with risks of landslides and bank collapses. It has caused rivers to dry up due to its redistribution of water and has a large annual power output.

China's Largest Freshwater Lake Dries Up -- Is the Massive Three Gorges Dam to Blame?

China's Largest Freshwater Lake Dries Up -- Is the Massive Three Gorges Dam to Blame? | The Three Gorges Dam | Scoop.it
Environmental researchers say the dramatic drying up of Poyang lake -- from 3,500 square kilometers to just 200 -- is due in part to the colossal, controversial reservoir.

While the Three Gorges dam helps generate energy and prevent flooding, it can also prevent some water from going to other areas, such the Poyang Lake. The dam has caused this lake to dry up as well as other lakes downstream, which has caused fish to die, which then messes up migratory patterns of birds.

People are starting to wonder  if the 3 gorges dam is doing more harm then good this lake has lost over 3,500 kiloliters of water due to the dam

The impact of the Three Gorges Dam on navigation

- Contrary to the objectives and justifications for the construction of the dam which included improvements to navigation, the dam has instead left freshwater lakes bereft

- While drought and a drop in precipitation were partly to blame, there is mounting evidence that the precipitous drop in water levels in lakes like Poyang are caused by the Three Gorges Dam further upstream

- Since 2006 when the Three Gorges reservoir was deepened, there has been a significant decrease in water levels in freshwater lakes downstream

Three Gorges Dam Fully Operational

Three Gorges Dam Fully Operational | The Three Gorges Dam | Scoop.it

"The final 32 generators went into operation this week, making it the world's largest hydropower project, pictured, built on the Yangtze River in China."  This photo gallery has a tremendous video at the end that displays vividly the raw power that moves the turbines.  Economically, what are the benefits? Environmentally, what are the costs?

China has completed the Three Gorges Dam when the final generators went into operation. It is a very large dam that distributes water in China during drier times of the year. It will decrease the chances of flooding during the major rainfall season. It is great for water flow but it also takes a lot of energy.

The three gorges dam displays the extraordinary things man can do to manipulate the environment.  This man made dam also shows how much technology influences our geographic space.

Danger May Force Thousands To Move From Three Gorges Dam

Danger May Force Thousands To Move From Three Gorges Dam | The Three Gorges Dam | Scoop.it
SHANGHAI -- Another 100,000 people may have to move away from China's Three Gorges Dam due to the risk of disastrous landslides and bank collapses around the reservoir of the world's biggest hydroelectric facility, state media said Wednesday.

The Three Gorges Dam may be putting thousands of people at risk due to its dangerous location and massive water output. It is the world's largest hydroelectric facility and due to its large amount of nearby water sources, this puts it at risk for landslides and other natural disasters. Many have already relocated because of the fear of banks collapsing and property damage.
