Marnie McGillivray's insight:

This is an easy to understand lesson idea that is aimed at year 3-4 students. Its aim is to test different safe materials in class and investigate which materials would be best to use for a school uniform, and why.

This links in with the Australian Curriculum for year 3 and above students in the design and technologies strand. As it gets the students to investigate different materials, by touching and feeling them, and then testing the materials for their appropriateness (ACARA, 2014). It could be used with year 5 and 6 students if you took the activity further and then looked at the practicalities of using certain materials. For example, the cost of the material, the durability of the material and the impact on the environment (ACARA, 2014).

mysusthouse - an interactive game exploring what sustainability means and how it relates to our homes

Marnie McGillivray's insight:

Mysusthouse is an easy to use, fantastic interactive resource that links to the Technologies curriculum’s Design and Technology strand for year 3-4. The engaging resource has 3 sustainability games: sustainable environment, building a sustainable house and developing a sustainable town.

The resource begins by explains how decisions need to be made based on sustainability and money. While working through the games the students are building an understanding of how certain materials are more sustainable then others. Then they have to make a compromise between choosing a sustainable product or and a cheap product. At the end of the game the students will be given a printable certificate with their score.

This resources links to the curriculum for year 3 and above students as it gets students to analysing a range of products, services and environments and gets them to consider the impacts on the local community and environment (ACARA, 2014). It also allows the students to compare their design with other students. For example, they will investigating which environment, house or town was the most sustainable within the budget and discuss why that is (ACARA, 2014).

Design and technology areas of application of sustainability — Skills for Sustainability

Design and technology areas of application of sustainability — Skills for Sustainability | The Technology curriculum and Sustainability | Scoop.it
Examples of how sustainability applies in the design and technology functions in a business to improve energy efficiency, capture water and design buildings to reduce heating and cooling costs. Designing efficient products and applying life cycle analysis and cradle to cradle concepts is a focus for many businesses
Marnie McGillivray's insight:

This is an interesting read. It explores the idea of design and technology and gives example of how it would be used. For example, it explains that setting up an environment system to help manage risks and take regular measurements of air, water and soil quality so that you can respond quickly to  any incidents is part of the design technology. The article provides more example of what design and technology is.

This articles links in with the Design and technology Curriculum for year 3-4 and 5-6 as it could be used to discuss the idea of the design and technology unit. To explain technology is not just computers it it teaching them the ability to think about problems or issues and to improve.
