"We believe we can win this" - Jimmy Spithill, skipper OTUSA

"We believe we can win this" - Jimmy Spithill, skipper OTUSA | The Sailing Lifestyle | Scoop.it
Julie Smith's insight:

Jimmy Spithill, pictured here, along with his team, Oracle Team USA, dominated races 14 and 15 of the 34th America's Cup against Emirates Team New Zealand.  With the leadership of Ben Ainslie and Tom Slingsby calling tactics, OTUSA's performance improved tremendously.  At today's press conference, Jimmy still refers to his team as "the underdogs" and believes OTUSA will continue to overcome the kiwis lead.

The racing isn't over yet as Emirates Team New Zealand is only one point away from winning the 34th America's Cup.  Oracle needs to win 3 consecutive matches to successfully defend its title.  Racing continues Monday afternoon at 1:10 pm PST.

Julie Smith's insight:

AC Open sailing events are a new feature added to race days.  Once the AC72's cross the finish line, the AC Open, regattas with smaller one-design fleets, starts about 15 minutes following the AC72 finish.  This weekend 30 kiteboarders, including World Champions Johnny and Erika Heineken, participated in the event.  Learn more about this amazing sibling team here: http://heinekenracing.com

2013 - Year of the America's Cup

2013 - Year of the America's Cup | The Sailing Lifestyle | Scoop.it
Julie Smith's insight:

Two years ago San Francisco was named the host city for the 34th America's Cup.  What an exciting journey so far and the best is still to come!

What are your favorite memories and what are you looking forward to most in 2013?

My favorite memories include advocating for the Cup at San Francisco City Hall, nearly getting run over in a small rib by ORACLE TEAM USA SPITHILL in San Diego (clearly our captain didn't know the racecourse boundaries), and watching Jimmy and crew recover from their first capsize and go on to win the second America's Cup World Series in San Francisco.

Red Bull Youth America's Cup off to a flying start, Sept 1-4, San Francisco

Red Bull Youth America's Cup off to a flying start, Sept 1-4, San Francisco | The Sailing Lifestyle | Scoop.it
Julie Smith's insight:

Great to see 10 boats representing 8 countries on the start line today.  The American Youth Sailing Force won the start and scored the first victory, by 43 seconds, in race one of this inaugural series.  These boys have been training hard all summer and it paid off.

New Zealand Sailing Teams scored well today and Full Metal Jacket won the second fleet race of the day.  Racing is tight and tomorrow brings another day of excitement.  All races are sailed in the AC45 America's Cup class of catamarans.  Fleet race 3 starts at 11:10 am on Monday (Labor Day) and racing continues through Wednesday, September 4th.  Marina Green is a great place to watch the races.

Charlie Rose's interview with Larry Ellison

Charlie Rose's interview with Larry Ellison | The Sailing Lifestyle | Scoop.it
Oracle CEO and America's Cup team owner Larry Ellison speaks to Charlie Rose about how he's changing the sport of sailing to be more dramatic
Julie Smith's insight:

Charlie Rose:  You have won the America's Cup, you don't need to win it twice.

Larry Ellison: I realized after losing the America's Cup twice, my personality didn't allow me to quit when I'm losing.  And then after winning the America's Cup, my personality doesn't allow me to quit when I'm winning - so I'm kind of trapped.  I just can't quit.  Some people have that problem with cigarettes.  I don't smoke but I do sail.

Two dances: a day in the life of a San Franciscan

Two dances: a day in the life of a San Franciscan | The Sailing Lifestyle | Scoop.it
Julie Smith's insight:

Two minutes before the start of today's race, someone yelled out, "they are dancing!" The pre-start of a match race is like a dance as the boats cross tacks vying for the best position.  Lucky for San Franciscans, today marked the fourth real race of the Louis Vuitton Cup and a performance by the San Francisco Ballet at the famous Stern Grove Festival.  Here are a few of my favorite photos from the race and the ballet: http://bit.ly/1c57lWF

America's Cup may not be coming to New York, but I've sailed with Mr. America's Cup on the Hudson!

America's Cup may not be coming to New York, but I've sailed with Mr. America's Cup on the Hudson! | The Sailing Lifestyle | Scoop.it
Julie Smith's insight:

Today's announcement from the America's Cup Event Authority (ACEA) confirmed the America's Cup World Series (ACWS) will not have a stopover in New York City this spring.  The teams will instead focus on the "summer of sailing" in San Francisco which includes the Louis Vuitton Cup (July 4 - August 30) and the America's Cup finals starting September 7th.

Although we won't see the high speed racing AC45's competing on the Hudson River, it is still possible to see classic yachts, of past America's Cups, racing in front of Manhattan's skyline as seen in the above photo.  I took this photo in 2010 while racing with Mr. America's Cup himself, Dennis Conner.  We sailed together in New York Classic Week, a new event hosted by the Manhattan Sailing Club (www.myc.org) over Columbus Day Weekend.  The regatta brings together local classic yachts for a weekend of racing. It was the final day of the sailing and Dennis Conner surprised our crew and joined us onboard Aschanti IV, a 114 ft staysail schooner built in 1954.  It was amazing to sail with a man who knows more about the wind and currents than anyone I had ever met.

Post race video onboard Aschanti IV with the Manhattan skyline in the backdrop: http://youtu.be/jMsnM5Hn3MY

Hurricane Sandy sinks HMS Bounty off North Carolina

Hurricane Sandy sinks HMS Bounty off North Carolina | The Sailing Lifestyle | Scoop.it

My heart goes out to the crew aboard the HMS Bounty.  The US Coast Guard has rescued 14 crew members; however, the captain and one crew member are missing.

Earlier this summer I admired the Bounty docked by the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia.  The HMS Bounty is a replica of an 18th-century three-masted sailing ship built for the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty.
