Page: How I sanitized the feminist outrage over the Montreal massacre | The Politics of Gender | Scoop.it
I arrived in Montreal four hours after the killing was done. Yellow tape wrapped l'École Polytechnique like a macabre Christmas present; surviving students gripped each other in numb disbelief. I w...
Jody MacPherson's insight:

Shelley Page was one of the most respected grads in my class at Carleton's journalism school.

She was sent to cover the Montreal massacre and writes now with regret about how she dealt with the event - how the targeting of women was downplayed by Barbara Frum (women sometimes are part of the "old boys' club) and male editors, how the feminist response was so poorly covered by the national media.

When I think of how this event shaped the 20-something me, I think it's fair to say that it changed my entire outlook - and not for the better.

An honest look at how the media portrayed and sidelined feminism when it should have supported it. A courageous editorial.

The Unforgiving Minute

The Unforgiving Minute | The Politics of Gender | Scoop.it
Men, get ready to be uncomfortable for a while. While forgiveness may come one day, it won't be soon.
Jody MacPherson's insight:
From the article: "The fact that a great many men I have spoken to genuinely seem to think that the main issue here is how and whether they’re going to be able to get laid in the future is… I’m going to swallow a scream, and say that it’s “interesting.” Shockingly, this conversation is not about you and your boner. But since the difference between sex and sexual violence apparently needs explaining, put both hands on the table for a second and listen."

What we know—and have always known—about this moment in sexual harassment - Macleans.ca

What we know—and have always known—about this moment in sexual harassment - Macleans.ca | The Politics of Gender | Scoop.it
These stories of harassment exist on a spectrum, but they’re all about abuse of power as gratification, writes Tabatha Southey
Jody MacPherson's insight:
From the article: "...most of us realize that a man as wealthy and powerful as Weinstein need never have spent a night alone and, listening to the stories of the many women who have credibly accused him of threatening, tormenting, sexually assaulting and raping them, we can surmise that consensual sex, a phone call away, is not what gets him off. While these stories exist on a broad spectrum, they are about abuse of power as gratification, something these men felt entitled to at any cost, and about telling women what is first and foremost their place."

Opinion | The Cost of Devaluing Women | The Politics of Gender | Scoop.it
We all lose because of the biases of Wall Street and Silicon Valley.
Jody MacPherson's insight:
From the article: "...Wall Street has been, and is, predominantly male at the top. Its trading floors are 90 percent men. This ignores studies indicating that members of homogeneous groups tend to trust one another too much, leading to potential market mispricings. Homogeneity has led Wall Street firms to travel in packs, going after the same opportunities at the same time: junk bonds in the 1980s, tech stocks in the late 1990s and subprime lending in the run-up to the crash 10 years ago."

Opinion | The Men Who Cost Clinton the Election

Opinion | The Men Who Cost Clinton the Election | The Politics of Gender | Scoop.it
Jody MacPherson's insight:
From the article: It’s hard to look at these men’s coverage of Mrs. Clinton and not see glimmers of that same simmering disrespect and impulse to keep women in a subordinate place. When men turn some women into sexual objects, the women who are inside that box are one-dimensional, while those outside of it become disposable; the ones who refuse to be disposed of, who continue to insist on being seen and heard, are inconvenient and pitiable at best, deceitful shrews and crazy harpies at worst. That’s exactly how some commentary and news coverage treated Mrs. Clinton.
